Chapter Four

My ear-piercing screams burst out in the room, as if a bomb had exploded. I could hear my agonizing shrieks echo through the hallways out the slightly open door. Benjamin grabbed a handkerchief from his pocket and stuffed it into my mouth. Yelling in pain was definitely a wrong move. But I had to. It was so sudden it hurt so bad on top of my broken heart. This handkerchief was dirty and it had this unbearable stench which made me feel nauseous; Benjamin must have used it to wipe off his own sweat. I irked in utter disgust and winced in pain. My tears streamed out from the corners of my eyes. They were like pearls, crystal clear, glistening in the dim light and making its way out of my eyes. Drop by drop, blood landed at the edge of my shirt’s collar. The crimson blood stained my white shirt, standing out like a sore thumb.

The feathery bohemian-styled earring was one of a kind. It was customized, just for me. The brown bead had my name intricately carved on it. ‘Angela W.,’ it read. The attached feather was brown, with a mixed tinge of red, orange and yellow. It was my favorite pair of earrings, now it was stained with my blood. The yellow didn’t even seem yellow anymore, neither did the orange.

Benjamin had literally ripped my earring off my ear lobe. The force he had used was rough and harsh. It was as if he had changed into a completely different person. Benjamin, the guy I met at Starbucks, was no longer the Benjamin I knew now. The one I first met, he was a shy guy who didn’t dare look at me in the eye. He was a sweet and tender-loving boyfriend, the kind anyone else would’ve desired. He might have been poor, but he definitely stood out in terms of his character. I thought he would be the one. How foolish I was!

Benjamin held the earring in front of me. I was in a state of utter dismay and confusion. I couldn’t think straight anymore. I felt as if stars were spinning around my head. Firstly, to find out the person who kidnapped me was my boyfriend. Second, to find out that the man I gave my heart to, had never loved me. Lastly, this… He hurt me. It was all too much for me to take. I wished I could just kill myself. I wished I didn’t have to endure this. Why? Why was I Angela Williams? Why did I have to be the daughter of a wealthy man? Why couldn’t I just be any person out there? – Some person living a normal life. I wouldn’t mind if I was struggling to make ends meet, I really wouldn’t mind. These crazy thoughts whizzed around my head.

Why did Benjamin do that? How could he bear to? I still could not accept the facts.

I took a deep breath and tried to straighten out my thoughts.

Benjamin was going to send my blood-stained earring to my parents. Then he would ask for a ransom. Would Mum and Dad be willing to pay the money? Have they forgiven me for not listening to them about Benjamin? Would they still save this daughter who went against their words?

Mum, Dad, I’m sorry.

“I’ll be back soon, sweetheart. Don’t miss me too much,” Benjamin spoke before giving me a smug face, and then a menacing laughter.

I held my breath as he left the room.

My chance had come.
