We Have Won

I've been away for two long years,

I've seen happiness, I've seen tears.

I tried to make a difference in that place,

To see the look of joy on their face.

They smiled and shook my hand,

Even though I came from a different land.

Now my feet leave the ship that carried me home,

Home! Home at last!

Far from war, now distant past.

I hop on the bus that takes me home,

Back to the place I've always known.

I step up and knock on the door,

I hear little feet on the hardwood floor.

"Mommy, Mommy Daddy's home!"

I can't help but cry when I see my little girl,

Just two years old with little blonde curls.

She looked me in the eye, bright eyes smiling.

"Daddy, Daddy you kept your promise, I knew you would.

"You helped all those people any way you could."

So young, so wise behind those little blue eyes.

"That's right," I said, "We did our best. Now it's up to God to do the rest."

I'd been far away to two long years,

I'd seen happiness, I'd seen tears.

I'd known God was with me,

Right there by my side.

I'm home at last,

The war is done.

Praise be to God, we have won!
