Dear Diary,

Mum is nervous because I'm not talking again. I heard her talking to Dr. Chesman last night. She thinks I'm upset because we moved and I didn't want to.

That's true, but I also just don't want to sound like an idiot in front of Steven. He gets it, though. He gets that I don't talk.

His older brother is deaf, he told me, so he knows sign language. ASL, though. I think it'll be fine.

I can learn ASL if he wants me to.

It's good here for the simple reason that no one here has heard me speak.

In school, they'll probably just assume I'm mute. I suppose I am. Selectively, though. But they don't need to know that.

I like Steven. He's nice.

I think he like me, too. But, like likes me. I've never been in a relationship before. Never even been close to one.

Mum told me we have to start shopping for school. Steven offered to come with us. I don't know why.

What if he gets seen? He's popular, why would he want to go out in public with me?

People can be strange. Very odd. But who am I to judge?

Sincerely,

Charles David Barnes
