Sunlight

I was once the sunlight, tumbling along the grass,

shining down upon a smile.

I raced around, lighting all shadowy corners

Carefree and unworried in the fields.

I ruled over the world, over its greatness,

For it was all wonderful.

And as I ruled over the world, I grew.

I grew to see the animals, the plants,

To wonder of things, and to play games.

To wander the world, and shed my light over all

As the brightness slowly faded

And we raced our path as horses.

And when winter came, and I had to hide,

Sitting in the window, staring out at the shadowy snow.

I wondered where the summer had gone,

How it had flittered away before my eyes,

As a leaf falls down from a tree

Each day.

Slowly the skies grew gray,

Over fields of grass so green.

Slowly animals passed away,

Showing the world to be truly mean.

I was never so sure of this great lie

Then when I would sit in that window and cry.

For each true hue had become shaded,

As the colors of the world surely faded.

Oh, how time I hated.
