babe

it was a winter day in avonlea. y/n sadly had school today. she was trudging along in the snow, sinking in with every step. she was shivering, goosebumps up and down her arms. though you couldn't see them, y/n could definitely feel them.

she looked around, taking in the landscape around her. the trees were bare, but she still found them beautiful.

y/n didn't really like school. she had only two friends- diana barry and anne shirley cuthbert. they were nice to her, even though most people weren't. and that billy andrews, oh he was absolutely horrible!

all the boys were. except one: gilbert blythe. she hadn't met him, but she heard he wasn't bad. he was handsome, smart, and he had a very nice jawline ---

"well look it is! it's y/n!" a voice yelled from behind her.

y/n winced. she knew who it was, sadly, and turned around.

"that's my name. i'd hate for someone like you to be the person who wears it out," y/n replied with a much more confident tone than she expected. she turned back around and attempted to keep walking. but she heard him running to catch up with her.

"you know, i don't really like girls with attitude." he said. y/n scoffed.

"well, i don't like boys with the name billy andrews." she grumbled.

billy let out a forced laugh and stepped in front of her. he towered over her small figure, looking down at her menacingly. y/n's breath hitched. he stepped closer to her as she backed away quickly. she felt her heart race. billy had no mercy for anyone, especially not her.

"come on babe. don't be like that..." he said in a soft, menacing voice as he brushed her cheek with his thumb and smirked. y/n's breathing was ragged by now, terrified of what he might do to her.

"don't call me that." y/n tried to say firmly, but it came out cracked, showing how vulnerable she felt.

"you know, you're really pretty." he said, ignoring her comment.

"she said to get away from her, billy. why don't you ever listen?" a voice said from behind them.

y/n took a deep breath of relief and turned around.

"gilbert, it's great to see you, but i'm in the middle of something. i'll see you at school, okay?" billy replied harshly.

so this was the heroic gilbert blythe she's heard so much about.

gilbert walked up to billy and stepped in front of y/n. "you know, mr. phillips wouldn't want us late, don't you think? leave this pretty lady alone, and be on your way. please." gilbert said to him through gritted teeth. y/n blushed at gilbert's compliment.

billy laughed. "gilbert, why do you care? you've been gone for so long. this doesn't concern you." he said, refusing to back down.

"well, why does this concern you either? i don't think she asked for you to invade her personal space, billy, but as you have no sense of boundaries or logic, i don't expect you to realize you have." gilbert shot back.

billy smiled and shook his head. he pushed gilbert back. "leave this alone gilly."

"hands off. you seem to have a problem with that." gilbert said, looking him straight in the eyes.

billy laughed.

"i don't know what your problem is, blythe!" he exclaimed, shrugging his shoulders.

"you seem to be causing a lot of problems right now, billy, so why don't you go away?" y/n said from behind gilbert.

"shut up, slut!" billy said and quickly stepped behind gilbert to fiercely push her to the ground into the snow.

gilbert let out a growl of rage and grabbed billy, punching him square in the face.

y/n watched as a brawl erupted and they began wrestling each other, each trying to get a punch to the other's face. just as y/n thought billy had won, gilbert had an eruption of power and punched billy as hard as he could in the face, leaving him weak and exhausted in the snow.

gilbert's eyes turned from fiery and raging to soft and kind as he turned to y/n. he held out a hand, and she took it. gilbert gently pulled her up from the snow.

he put a protective hand on her back as he ushered her away from the groaning billy, and began to walk her to school.

"t-thank you." y/n said, desperate to get away from him. diana had told her that ruby gillis had "dibs" on gilbert, and that if she talked to him or was involved with him in any way, she'd get upset. ruby and her friends disliked her enough. she didn't want to give them another excuse.

"don't worry. anything for a pretty lady like you." he replied. y/n blushed.

"well, um, i'll see you at school." y/n said, quickening her pace.

"what's your name anyway?" he called after her. y/n simply looked quickly over her shoulder, and didn't answer.

"okay, fine. i'll just call you babe then, if you're so set on keeping your name a secret." he called after her again, desperate for her attention.

"um, no thanks!" y/n called back as she tried to quicken her pace even more- he was catching up to her.

"well, then tell me your name!" gilbert chuckled.

gilbert finally caught her, and softly grabbed onto her forearm. she spun around and met his beautiful hazel eyes. they stood there for a moment, just getting lost in each other's eyes.

"just tell me your name." he said, smiling.

"well, u-uh i don't-" y/n stuttered.

he looked down and smiled, shaking his head. then he walked ahead of her.

"see you at school...

babe."
