And what are we except beggars,
walking barefooted on shards of shattered dreams and broken hearts,
in the grim alley of life?

Feet cut and bleeding,
crimson blood spilling all over the pavement.

Metal cups in our hands,
and we're begging.

Begging for love that we can never get,
and peace that we can never find.

Begging for happiness long lost in young days when a smile came easily,
and a laugh was loud enough to echo off of the walls.

Nothing remains but tattered shreds of happy memories,
of old cheerful days long gone.
We hold these damaged pieces,
against our frail hearts and fragile bodies,
as our last hope for protection against the ruthless, merciless days.

We are all nothing but beggars...
