This was taken from a session/class in my coven.

Knot Magick (aka Cord Magick) is a form of spellcasting that is done by tying knots into some kind of cord while focusing on an intention. Knot Magick can also be performed by untying knots. It is versatile in use, as it can be used for many types of spells; protection, healing and binding spells are common. Knot Magick is known for being simple and quick.

Historical uses of Knot Magick

A common historical use of Knot Magick is through "Wind Knots". Three knots were tied into a cord and sold to sailors, or sailors would make their own. When one knot was untied aboard a ship, it created a slight breeze. After the second knot was untied a stronger wind would come up and the last knot untied could cause a hurricane.

Knot Magick was also used by the Romans for love and oath-related ceremonies. Tying knots symbolised an agreement or union between the parties involved; whether in a wedding ceremony or business/service agreements.

Another common practice is making sure that all knots in the house are untied when someone dies. It was a measure to make sure that the spirit of the deceased would not be bound to the Earth by the knots present in the house.

How to use Knot Magick

It is important to mention that this is just one way to do Knot Magick; I don't believe there is a 'correct' way to perform any kind of magick, so these are just guidelines to get you started!

1.) Pick a material that can be tied such as, string, wool, cord, thin rope, scarves/thin fabric etc. It may be helpful to pick a material that is a colour that corresponds to the theme of your spell (Black for protection, green for luck etc.)
2.) Do your pre-ritual practices (like casting a circle or meditating), if you desire to.
3.) Hold the cord and focus on your intention for the spell.
4.) Tie a knot while saying each line of the following spell (found in 'The Goodly Spellbook' by Lady Passion and Diuvei). Make sure to focus on your intention. Tie the first knot saying, "By Knot of one, my spell's begun."
"By Knot of two, it cometh true."
"By Knot of three, so mote it be."
You can stop here at three, or continue for 9 Knots, Tie the fourth knot saying, "By Knot of four, this power I store."
"By Knot of five, this spell's alive."
"By Knot of six, this spell I fix."
"By Knot of seven, events I'll leaven."
"By Knot of eight, it will be fate."
"By Knot of nine, what's done, is mine."
5.) Conclude the spell however you like (closing the circle, grounding, clearing etc.)
6.) You can keep the tied cord near your altar/sacred space, wear it or put it in your pocket, near your bed, give it as a gift; whatever you see fit.

Once the knots are tied, that's about it for the spell. If you ever wanted to make it stronger or something, you should undo the original and redo the entire thing. Your spell can be reversed by untying the knots.

Once the spell is successful, it is recommended to bury the cord. Some people may burn it as well (especially if the string is not biodegradable).
