" this blood on my hands ... "

ℑt took me a while to get Cato and myself out of the area, far enough away so Clove couldn't find us. I had no doubt that Clove would search endlessly for Cato as soon as she realized that her District partner was gone, and not dead after his face would fail to appear in the sky.

I elected to return to the lake where the Careers found me in the first place, having remembered seeing a waterfall on the other side of the lake. Nothing was ever coincidental in the Games, and sure enough, the falling water hid a hollowed out rock formation; a cave.

Without much regard to whatever head damage it would give Cato, I dropped him on the ground and leaned him against the side of the cave, glancing at him for another second before setting down all my things next to him, including his giant titan sword.

His head lolled against his shoulder, his eyelids abstracting his baby blue eyes from view. My eyebrows pulled together as my mind raced to come up with reasons as to why I had taken him with me, as to why I was trying to figure out how to help him.

I knelt down next to him, hesitantly reaching out until my fingertips brushed up against his cheek, his skin smooth, except for a giant tracker jacker sting on his jawline, and the faint feeling of stubble that was waiting to grow in. When he didn't wake up immediately, my hands flitted around, my eyes searching for just how many stings he had. He had enough to be hallucinating, and almost attack Peeta.

One on his jawline, one on his neck, one on his collarbone and one on his right wrist. Four stings were definitely enough to have him hallucinating, and enough to kill him if I didn't get him treatment soon.

During the Bloodbath, when he had saved me from that tribute. And the first night, when he saw me, but he didn't alert his fellow Careers, half of which are now dead. Two times he spared my life, decided that I was worth it for some reason.

And that was my reason. He saved me, so I was going to save him. And then we'd be even.

I let out a long sigh, feeling my chest empty of oxygen before sitting back on my heels, running a hand through my hair. Glancing down, I saw the streaks my hair made in the blood coating my hands, which was now half-dry. I absent-mindedly wondered how many times I would have to clean my hands of the red liquid, and start all over again.

I heaved my tired muscles up, moving around the falling water and exiting the cave, my eyes falling on the water of the lake that had already cleansed blood off of my hands once. I kneeled down by the edge, feeling some of the mist from the waterfall spray onto my cheek, mixing in with the sanguine liquid. I dipped my hands into the water, feeling it cool me off almost instantly. I let out a breath as I watched the blood swirl off of my hands and mix in with the water, disappearing within seconds.
