Suddenly it all clicks.
Klaus.
That son of a bitch.
I first met him while I was in England. We quickly became best friends, because I've got a thing for the sarcastic kinds. Then my tribe was murdered in front of me and I was forced to move back to the States. But oh did me and klaus have some good times. Most of those good times involved me being blackout drunk and ending up somewhere strange. Good times.
I smiled at the memories before focusing my gaze back on klaus. I yelled across the river, "Klaus!"
His head snapped in my direction, so fast I thought he might have gotten whiplash. Quickly locking eyes with me, I could notice him accessing me to make sure I wasn't a threat.
"Get Your Hybrid Ass Over Here And Hug Me", I could hide the smirk as I yelled.
Before I could blink we was standing directly in front of me, leaning in for an embrace. A very thigh embrace. If I was a normal human I would probably be in pain. Fortunately, I was use to his famous tight-as-hell hugs. I reciprocated the death grip.
We stayed hugging for a good minute, he took gulp full breaths in my neck. Too soon, he pulled back from me, eying me up and down to insure that it was truly me.
"Majesty, I thought you died. It is so good to see your face, love." Klaus smiled brightly at me.
He returned his heartfelt smile and replied theatrically, "Oh Klaus, always so dramatic"
Of course he would think I was dead. After the tribe died I shrunk back into the shadows. Unfortunately, Klaus was far from my mind. I had people hunting me. Luckily, I escaped with my life.
Klaus' voice brought me out of those dark memories, "Well people tell me, if I'm not being dramatic than I'm just an ass."
"You're always an ass", I retorted with a little laugh. I could always count on Klaus for pulling me from dark thoughts.
His face turned mischievous and a dark grin played on his lips, "You shouldn't have said that, love"
Before I knew it I was being lifted up and tossed into the river.
Shit.
I can't swim.
Water quickly surrounded me, I was sinking.
I opened my eyes, hoping to find something to grab onto to prevent me from drowning in this river. All I saw was murky water, I could barely make out the fish that swam around me.
It's crazy how something so filled with life can bring so much death.
Everything was coming back to me.
The car.
My parents.
That green eyed freak.
I knew better than to let the water fill my lungs like it so badly wanted to. I could feel the pressure building up.
A hand snaked it's way around my waist, pulling me back up to the surface.
The light nearly blinded me when the cold air touched my skin.
I allowed fresh air to fill my lungs and it burned. It felt like my lungs were punishing me for starving them of the oxygen they need.
I could barely notice being set down on the soft grass next to the lake. I didn't even notice the tears streaming down my face as the blended in with the water.
My lungs continued to burn.
The world slowly began to form around me again.
First I felt the warm hand of Klaus stroking my back as I let in more air. Then I heard the millions of apologies spilling from his mouth.
When everything felt okay again I looked up at him.
"You okay, love? Sorry about that.", Said the man that tried to drown me. I promptly flipped him off. His voice continued, "I didn't know you couldn't swim."
"I know how to swim. Well... I knew how to swim. After the- now I just freeze up whenever I'm in water.", I spoke honestly. I tried not to talk about it much, I didn't want people to know how much it affected me. I don't want them to see me as weak.
I saw how his face morphed into something of pity. This is exactly what I don't want. I tore my head away from his stare and looked off into the numerous trees.
"You should get those wet clothes off. It's getting cold.", Klaus chose his words carefully. Choosing to move past the intense topic. He noticed how it made me uncomfortable.
A particularly big gust of wind travelled through the forest, sending cold air over my soaked clothes. I couldn't ignore it anymore. I'm freezing my ass off.
"Take me to the Gilbert family home. I could get you some clothes too.", I eyed his soaking wet clothes as I spoke.
He smiled as he agreed, "Sounds good, love"

With the help of vampire speed, it took mere seconds to get back to the house. I literally spent hours roaming the forest and Klaus can traverse it in seconds. It's very aggravating.
When I entered the house, I was greeted with immediate yelling by Elena.
"Majesty Gilbert! Where the heck were you? You could easily get hurt in those woods, or even killed! I tell you that vampires exist and you decide that now is a great time to go out into the woods- Oh my- Why are you soaking wet? It's-."
There is only so much of her babbling that I can take before I take a Remington 870 straight to the head.
I cut her off before she causes my ears to bleed, "Elena, I'm fine. I just went for swim in the river."
Before she could lecture me anymore I tried to make my escape upstairs. I got one foot on the first step before I was being pulled back down. This time by Dylan.
He wrapped his arms around me pulled me into a hug from behind. It didn't take long for him to realize that I was wet and pull away. I slowly turned to face him.
"Majesty, I though you might have gotten hurt?" Dylan's voice held so much empathy and concern. I would have almost bought it if not for that fact that I was a skilled hunter. No way a trip in the forest would hurt me.
I held onto him stare for a few seconds, communicating that I was okay. Then I spoke to the both of them, "Listen, I am okay. I just need to get changed and take a nap. A lot has happened today, I just need time to think."
The mood in the room became a whole lot less tense and Elena visibly relaxed. Dylan mostly looked confused. But nevertheless I leaned in for a kiss. I stead of kissing his lips I decided on the cheek. Whispering a code word for only him to hear.
"Foxtrot"
Then I made my way upstairs.
There are many code words that are known only between tribe members. They usually mean a whole array of different things. Romeo means it's a trap. Sigma means run and run far. Foxtrot means all is well.
Upon entering my room I immediately see Klaus in the window. He is sitting very carefully on a branch in a tree that is adjacent to my room. His clothes soaked clear through and with every gentle blow of the wind the branch with move ever so slightly causing him to fumble as he tried not to fall.
I held in my laughter the best I couldn't until I shut the bedroom door. Then all bets were off. I laughed so hard I could feel my lungs trying to make their way out of my chest.
It took a while before the laughter died down. At that point I opened to window, letting all the cold air in. I shivered, remembering the very cold, very wet clothes I was still in.
Either way, Klaus couldn't get into the house, because I have yet to invite him in. So he remained at the window, on the branch.
Still I laughed at Klaus' predicament, "Looks like you got yourself in a pickle there."
He chuckled sarcastically, "Ha, Ha. Very funny, love. Now let me in."
I couldn't help but laugh at his dry humor.
I promptly shut the curtains leaving the window still open to blow cold air inside.
I couldn't help but miss Klaus, especially with things so dark and serious all the time. Klaus use to be the one person I could count on to brighten my day. Unfortunately, Dylan could never know about Klaus. I know Dylan has zero mercy for vampires and he would not hesitate to use a copper plated synth to slice Klaus' head clean off.
Pushing back the thought of Dylan killing my only friend, I dressed myself in warm, dry clothes.
I double check to make sure the door is locked before walking back to the window.
I open the curtains and smile up at Klaus, who glared back at me, "Alright, Alright. Come on in."
He flung himself into my room, slamming me against the wall directly behind me. He held me tight against the wall as he joked, "You are the worst best friend ever."
I smirked and shoved him to the ground, catching him off guard.
I join him on the ground, positioning myself on top of him. I swiftly maneuvered the stake that was hidden under my bed  for safe keeping. I grasp the stake firmly in my hands before thrusting into Klaus' abdomen. I pulled my hands back smirking down at Klaus, only to find his shit eating grin looking back at me.
He let out a deep laugh and wasted no time as he pulled the stake out. The wound healed just as quickly as it appeared and Klaus flipped our positions. He now laid on top of me.
"Nice try, love. But it takes more than one measly stake to kill a hybrid."
