tom

i bobbed my knee, up and down, waiting for the double doors in front of me to open. behind them, was my entire future.
i could hear at least two clocks ticking over the minimal noise of the waiting room television. more nerve-wracking than necessary, it added copious amounts of pressure into what already laid on my shoulders.
my patience was wearing thin.
the door handle lowered and the click of it opening struck my attention. the doctor i previously spoke to walked out with an unreadable expression. offering me to sit down once again, he took a seat beside me.
complications had arisen in the delivery room. my wife chose for the baby to be treated. our baby girl survived. my wife, she didn't.
i held my little girl and rocked her gently, swaying in my step. at only a few hours old she was identical to her mother; the twinkle in her eye, a dimple on her chin, soft and delicate hands and pale skin.
my one and only, the heart of my love inside the chest of this angel.
