"Ho ho ho, little girl. And what might your name be?"

She looks up at the shopping mall Santa Claus and smiles. "Elizabeth," she lisps.

"And what do you want for Christmas, Elizabeth?"

The girl shakes her head. "I've already told my mother. You don't need to know."

"But don't you want to - ?"

"Listen, whoever you are," Elizabeth begins. "I'm only here to keep my mother happy. She thinks I'm still a little kid, but I know better. I don't believe in Santa any more. So you just smile and play along, right?"

Sant Claus swallows and stifles a tear.
