"I'm sorry," You managed to say through your sobs.
Steve had long since abandoned the punching bag to comfort you; his arms held you close to his chest as you cried into his shoulder.
"Shh, it's okay, y/n. It's okay. It's going to be fine. You're going to be fine," Steve reassured you.
"It's just so much. I never wanted all this..." you paused, searching for the right word, "chaos. I just wanted to help people, to do the right thing. It's all so complicated now. Why is doing the right thing complicated?"
"I know. I know, shh. Did I ever tell you what happened with SHIELD in DC, 2014? It was after everything that happened in New York, when I took down those Helicarriers? I felt the same way. I remember going," He stopped, trying to calm down so that he wouldn't start crying too, "I remember going see Peggy, at her bedside. I told her "For the longest time, I just wanted to what was right. I guess I'm not really sure what that is now," Peggy called me dramatic," Steve laughed, still holding you as your tears stopped. "SHIELD was trying to get me to go on missions that I didn't think were right, or gave my teammates different assignments than me, and not tell me. Fury called it compartmentalization, said that no one can spill the secrets if no one knows them. That happened quickly. A little while later I was labeled a traitor of SHIELD and they started hunting me down. Natasha and Sam helped me, and we took down SHIELD, because it had been taken over by HYDRA."
"Had HYDRA been there the whole time? Like, since Peggy founded it?" you asked quietly, grateful for the distraction.
"Yeah. I think so. Honestly, I think they waited until Peggy wasn't the director of SHIELD to even start doing anything." Steve said, a smile playing at his lips.
You laughed. "Of course they'd have waited until Peggy stepped down. She would have taken down the entire thing single-handedly!"
"Probably," Steve laughed too.
"Thank you," You whispered to him, no longer crying.
"Of course," He replied, hugging you tighter before pulling away, a small smile on his face.
