Chapter 19

“Alex, are you sure it’s safe here?” I asked, walking around barefoot down the rocky hill. I had taken off the heels Clarice let me borrow for tonight off a while ago. Trying to walk down on a bunch of boulders without tripping in heels would be extremely hard.

“Trust me.” Alex turned back to me. He gave me a small smile, and held his hand out for me. “I’ll catch you if you fall.”

I licked my lips, staring at his outreached hand nervously. I was hesitant to take it, but I soon enveloped my small hand into his. “Okay.” I breathed.

His long and lean fingers laced into mine, as we continued downhill. “What are you trying to show me anyways?” I asked, pushing a branch that was in my way.

“This.” Alex said, letting go of my hand. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed, but when I saw the scenery before my eyes, I gasped.

“Wow.” I stared at the lake that was looked incredibly beautiful and sparkly under the light that came from the full moon that was out today. “This is incredible.”

Alex smiled softly beside me, staring up at the stars that looked unusually bright tonight. I couldn’t help but notice how vulnerable he looked. Under that arrogant persona, he was a beautiful human being. “It is, isn’t it?”

I stared into his eyes, loving how they lit up even in the dark. “It sure is.”

Alex turned towards me, looking right into my eyes. My cheeks flushed when he noticed that I was staring at him the entire time. He let out a small smirk, twirling a lock of my hair between his fingertips. “Are we talking about the lake or me here?” he teased.

My eyes widened, as I blushed. I turned away from him, as I pointed to the lake. “I was talking about the lake.” I cleared my throat.

Alex chuckled, nodding. “Alright, Aerial, whatever you say.”

I rolled my eyes playfully, as I laid myself down flat on the ground. I didn’t care that I was going to ruin my hair, or my dress. I didn’t care, because as long as I was with Alex, nothing mattered to me but him.

Alex lay down beside me, and I couldn’t help but noticed how our arms were touching.

Suddenly, Alex turned to me. There was a glint in his blue eyes when I stared back at him. “Aerial,” he started off, letting out a deep breath of air, “what happened between us?”

“What do you mean?” I smiled weakly, even though I knew exactly what he meant.

Alex licked his lips, staring at me with an uneasy expression. “I’m sorry for bringing up memories of your mother, I didn’t know that she was-“

“Dead?” I finished for him, feeling my own voice crack.

Alex pursed his lips. “Yeah.” He paused, sighing. “I guess I can’t apologize for your mother’s death, but I can apologize for bringing it up. I honestly didn’t know.”

I nodded, closing my eyes. “I know. It wasn’t your fault.”

“Yes, it was.” Alex insisted. “And I’m sorry for letting you go so easily. I really didn’t mean it when I said I didn’t care about you.”
