Chapter Thirty-Six

"Yeah... That Rune definitely isn't in the Gray Book." Jace sighed, after Leah and Clary had told him what happened back at Iris's basement.

They still had no explanation forwhat happened, or how Clary was able to do that with a rune that none of them had ever seen before. Leah sighed tiredly. "Maybe it's in another volume?"

Jace shook his head. "Pretty much all runes are in the Gray Book. Those that aren't are reserved for the most elite members of the Clave, and there is no way Clary would've ever seen them."

"Why do I know it, then?" Clary asked, glancing at them both, in search for answers.

"How did you know to draw it?" Leah asked.

"It appeared to me, like... Like a vision. As if someone or something was trying to send me a message." Clary explained. "Wait. Do you think it could have been my mom?"

Jace and Leah exchanged a look. Simply by the sadness in his eyes, Leah could tell the answer to the question wasn't what Clary was hoping for. "Clary, I know you miss her, but..."

"How else do you explain it?" Clary questioned, and to be fair, no one had a reply.

"Maybe if we ask Izzy and Alec they could help us—" Leah started, taking Clary's sketch of the rune before being stopped by Jace, who grabbed her wrist and pulled her back towards him.

"Not a good idea. If you tell anyone else, they could be in danger, too." Jace said, making Leah arch an eyebrow.

"Jace, it's the Lightwoods we're talking about. Our parabatai."

"You of all people should know that the Clave is quick to persecute anyone or anything they don't understand." Jace retorted, and as much as it annoyed her to admit it, he was right. If they told Isabelle or Alec, they might be obligated to report it to the Clave, and it might put all of them in danger from them.

There was a knock on the door and Leah was relieved to see Isabelle on the frame, while she noticed Jace hiding the rune sketch in his pocket discreetly. Izzy cleared her throat. "Sorry if I'm interrupting family bonding time."

"You're not interrupting anything. What's up?" Leah asked, trying to act as casual as possible.

"I just wanted to see how Clary was doing, you know, before we go to the Citadel." Isabelle said, holding Clary's hand affectionately. "I hate to have to leave you."

"Where are you going?" Clary frowned, clearly having forgotten all about the visit to the Iron Sisters.

"Leah and I are going to the Iron Sisters."

"The who?"

Leah smiled, glad that for once, she knew more than Clary about something in the Shadow World. "The Iron Sisters. They're basically the Silent Brothers's female counterparts."

"Except their mouths and eyes aren't sewn shut and they also happen to be the most badass warriors, like, ever!" Isabelle continued with an excited giggle. "I used to want to be one when I was a little girl, but I changed my mind when I learned I had to swear off both boys and girls."

"I'm glad you're so excited about it, Iz. But weren't you still recovering from the time Clary stabbed you?" Jace asked, a sarcastic grin on his face.

"I'm fine, really. Hey... Would you like to come with us?" Isabelle asked Clary.

"But I'm not even trained yet. Would Aldertree be okay with that?"

"Let me handle him." Isabelle winked. "Come on. I want to show you some books about the Sisters and what they do!"
