Barbara had followed her word. In late February she saw Tim Staffell again, went on a date or two of 'Smile' gigs before he kissed her for the first time. Roger watched the two of them closely, he regretted telling her the next gig dates for 'Smile'. Roger disliked seeing Barbara standing beside someone else, being so proud of someone else, laughing with someone else, hugging someone else. He thought about what she had asked him months ago, at the start of the year.

Something along the lines of 'we won't change, will we?'

Roger spoke the truth and kept his word, he cut all ties with Sally. Obviously Barbara would never ignore Roger, but he received less attention from her than he usually did, and he found himself not liking it one bit. He stood alone on the dates that Barbara came to see the band, to see Tim, until Brian would stand next to him holding two bottles of beer in his hand - sometimes he'd have to sit himself down, his nerves tingling, becoming more and more frustrated as he watched the two from across the room.

He watched as Tim put his arms around his friend, his best girl, pulling her closer to him in order to press a kiss to her lips, something that Roger could never do, not now, he didn't know how he had, had the guts to when they were much younger, ...

He watched as Tim put his arms around his friend, his best girl, pulling her closer to him in order to press a kiss to her lips, something that Roger could never do, not now, he didn't know how he had, had the guts to when they were much younger, things had changed, they had changed, and Roger was not about to make a fool of himself, not when she meant more to him than anything ever had. He was protective over her and assumed that it was only due to the fact that he was meant to look out for her as her best friend. He remembered how much Steve had hurt her, not knowing exactly what had happened between them, but seeing her sit alone in the lunch hall made his heart drop.
