22nd December 1977 Barbara's POV Chap4

I sat at what once was Mary and Freddie's apartment after receiving a phone call from Mary. She missed me, as did I. I missed it when we were all friends and working at the Kensington stall while studying at university - when we were young. When it was me, Roger, Mary, Freddie, Stella and Brian - we shared some amazing memories in that stall, when Freddie would enthuse about an article of clothing - he would wrap a scarf around me and Brian would laugh and call it all 'old tat'.

Mary brought in two teas and sat herself down next to me. She smiled, "How's it been since your duet released?"

I sigh, raising my eyebrows, "It's been - a lot. More press around, things like that - had some phone calls about signing me, but I've declined because I decided that I'd continue working with Bernie - er, Bernie Taupin," I smiled before stopping myself from continuing, "What about you - how've you been? We didn't talk much at Earl's Court."

She nodded, her fingers tapping at her mug of tea, "Yeah - I'm sorry about that. I had to - leave," she paused as she took a little sip of her drink, "I'm okay - after everything. I feel fine - surprisingly."

"Freddie will miss you terribly when they go on tour - they're leaving on Boxing Day," my eyes stare down at my lap - thinking about Roger

"Freddie will miss you terribly when they go on tour - they're leaving on Boxing Day," my eyes stare down at my lap - thinking about Roger. The two of us had done our best to spend as much time together before he was to leave for tour - I told myself that I had to stay and write - I still didn't know whether I was making the right decision, knowing that I'd miss him terribly after how busy we'd been in the last few months.

"I know - I'll miss him too. He'll call, I'm sure," she replies with a small smile, "Thank you for coming - even though I've had calls and my dad has visited a few times, I've still felt quite lonely here."

"You're always welcome to visit - whenever. I'll be around as I'm not going with the boys on their tour," I reply with a small grin before shuffling closer to her and leaning my head on her shoulder.

Christmas Day

Me and Roger spent Christmas Day together alone at our apartment after an extremely late night celebrating at Freddie's house. Today was about the only day we'd be able to spend the whole day together - since the release of Don't Go Breaking My Heart, News Of The World and Roger's first solo song I Wanna Testify.

He took me by the hand and led me to the car in order to go on a small road trip that he'd planned himself - he was organised, had his map out and a flask of coffee. But the Range Rover has other ideas and decided to break down along the way. I watched him as he climbed out of the car with a small smile on my face - a long line of curse words left his lips as he lifts the bonnet of the car, "I fucking hate you sometimes," I hear him groan at the vehicle, "Looks like we're going to be stuck here for a while."
