Death

60 15 21

If I am to die tonight
While lying on the floor,
And put into purgatory
(Though I do not know what for),
And if my heart should cease to beat
And thus end my short survival,
I hope you know no feeling
Can act as a revival.

If the Gods do wish it
(That my life should now be done) -
That I have achieved my purpose
Or my value has its course run,
And I find myself empty
Of any spirit to call my own,
I hope you know that death
Does not make me alone.

If I am to go, my sweet,
Please don't mourn my loss.
Don't live a life of sadness
'Til you've rotted into moss.
There's a careful procedure
In the rigid end of death,
That starts with our first cry,
And ends with our last breath.

If I am to die tonight,
Promise me you'll stay.
Kiss my knuckles softly
Until I fade away.
My time has come, my darling -
It's time to go back home.
Don't wait for me to come back -
You will wake up alone.
