Somewhere in the vicinity
Of my ribcage
Is a waxen lump.
I expect it beats normally,
But it seems so very fragile
That I often feel the need to check
Whether it still thumps.

I do not remember when I found
That I had a wax heart -
All I know is the truth
Came upon me in a way
That made me realise:
I had know all along.

Perhaps you will light a match
And set it alight,
Watching the wax drip
And drop
Away.
I don't know what you will find
When there is no wax left behind.

Or maybe you'll take a hammer
And break it.
That will hurt me, no doubt -
But I suppose you don't care.
The wax, at least,
Has no feeling.

You might be more gentle
And peel away the many layers,
The reddish wax shavings
Sticking to the floor.
What tool would you use?
Would you care?
Would I care?
Who can say.

Or you might take your own
Waxen mould,
And encase my fragile machine
With yours. And the beating,
That was so weak once
For us both,
Will grow stronger,
When our wax hearts fuse together,
And form a being
More powerful than all.
