Both houses typically strive for a form of perfection in whatever field it is they desire. They are relentless when it comes to this, and can even steamroll over anyone else to reach their ideal goals and positions.
Slytherins differ in that they want to succeed above all else. They want to be the best, they want to become the master of whatever subject or what-have-you.
Ravenclaws believe that through knowledge, understanding, and wisdom lies the means to master anything, even if it is merely a theoretical understanding of an activity, or knowing every fact and building off of the facts pertaining to any certain subject.
For Slytherins, the task is never over until they are the acknowledged best.
For Ravenclaws, the task is never over until they know everything there is to know, and have given their two cents on the matter.
Slytherins, relating to friends, will accept those loyal to them, but have a streak of ego-centrism and selfishness, but they don't intentionally mean to "use" friends, but it may sometimes seem that way.
Ravenclaws hold friends second to their own intellectual pursuits, but can use them as an outlet to share their wisdom, as well as find a relief from relentless study.
To put it simply, Slytherins' motivation is absolute success, and Ravenclaws' is absolute knowledge.
