"Baby, the taxi is here," Gram called from the front of the house.

I hastily gave myself a once-over before sashaying out of my room. I didn't dress up very often and was definitely relishing doing so today. I had picked out a blue dress that squeezed me snugly at my waist. I adored how it made my figure look. I had even put a little part in my hair and made up my face.

I was nervous as I made my way outside, but I knew I was more nervous to see William at the carnival in a short while. It would be thrilling to see him outside the confines of his home. It'd give me a better feeling of whether these feelings bubbling beneath the surface of our interactions were truly valid.

"You look fine enough to snack on. You betta not get these men caught up tonight." Grams cackled from her seat on the porch. Charles, who was also on the porch, laughed.

"Don't you worry Mrs. Johnston. I'll keep a close eye on her."

"Booooyyy," Gram drawled, giving him serious side eye and an impish grin. Charles laughed and turned to me.

"You look absolutely stunning, Eva. Just beautiful." My face heated up as I received his lips on my cheek.

"Thank you, Charles. You look very sharp yourself." And I meant it.

I kissed Gram. "I'll be back in a few hours. Please stay out of trouble."

Charles helped me into the taxi before going around and sliding in himself. I could feel his eyes on me as I peered out the window of the moving vehicle.

"I'm a lucky man to have you on my arm," he said, breaking the silence.

I turned to him and smiled. His hand found my own, and I sighed inwardly. I suppose I should have been happy, but he was already slightly irking my nerves, for no real reason.

"I'm sure that cracker will have a fit." I couldn't help but eye him sharply.

"What? You and I both know he has some weird possessiveness about you, but officer white bread can't have you, if I have any say in the matter." Fool, you don't.

I was thoroughly irritated now. "Why must you always bring him up, Charles. Every single time we're together."

Charles shrugged and rubbed the top of my hand with his free one. I wanted to snatch my hand back.

"He's just bad news, and I don't want you to forget that."

"He's a good employer, Charles. And no one is perfect. I'm not giving him a pass, but this messed up town probably doesn't help shape a person to be very tolerant."

Charles eyed me severely. "Are you coming down with a case of feelings for this bitch?"

"Charles!"

"Eva, it can be hard being in a new town all by yourself. I'm looking out for you, and I won't let you become some bed wench for officer ghost-face. Sometimes you need a little guidance and protection, and that's what I'm here for." He kissed my knuckles.

"Ok," I responded simply, willing the anger heating my neck to subside. I just wanted to enjoy the evening in peace.

We arrived and I was sure my heart would bust out of my chest. Charles paid the cab and then we made our way to the Negro entrance. I spotted William before he spotted us. I could see him smile and greet people as they came in. My heart simultaneously softened and sped up, seeing his toothy grin. My comfort.

I took Charles extended arm. William finally saw us. His face looked pained at first, but quickly switched to something I couldn't help but peg as adoration. My eyes were fixed on him. William, I'm dressed for you. I'm here for you.
