We Wandered in Our Nightclothes

In our nightclothes, we wandered.
In our nightclothes, we went
Through waves of leaves long squandered,
Under the moonlight through branches so bent.

Within the hills and through the valleys,
Spurred by the song in the smoke of the wind.
We ran our own little rallies---
Sometimes they weren't so kind.

In our nightclothes we spent,
In our nightclothes, we looked up,
There the stars danced to a stranger song of Lent.
We went our own way, thinking we were grown-up.

Through wishes, we flew
Deep in the shadows of the ruddy light
While the cold winds blew
Caressing snow around our feet, its grasp so might.

In our nightclothes, we swayed
A waltz like no other.
Amongst the feathered field we played,
Watching the planets fall one after another.

I ran with you,
You walked with me.
I saw your eyes in the dew
And asked, "Are you a fantasy?"

In our nightclothes we watched the seasons change
And saw things that were strange
Deep in our minds' shadows,
Where instead of terror there was a mystery in the gallows.

In our Nightclothes we strayed away,
In our nightclothes, we drifted from my home.
You said it would be okay,
But I never felt it in my bone.

Into the foothills and the mountains we walked.
I tried to turn but you said I was not the Earth.
You said that the dawn has talked,
And that this dream is not true to its worth.

The night is cloaked in its clothes
And fantasy follows me with yearning.
She calls along the sweep of sleep as it goes
Over the waves of sweet, dark water returning.

In nightclothes, we wandered,
Through the leaves we squandered,
Through shadow, valley, and spring,
I can, in my sleep so deep, still hear your beckoning ring.
