Chapter One

The abused floor boards creak under the merciless weight of your boots. The air is riddled with millions of particles of dust, and ink is in the air in heavy doses. It leaves your nose scrunching up in response to the strong smell of chemicals. What really gets your attention though, is the big gaping hole in the floor. It is smacked almost right in front of the crumbling door. You lean over it and looked down, only to barely see what you make out as a bottom to the pit. You really hope you will not fall down there. That looks like it would hurt.

Perhaps this was a bad idea after all...coming here... You shake those thoughts away. If anything happens, you can just use your cell phone to call the police or something, so there is not much need to worry. You really do not trust the durability of any board in this place though. It looks like it has been abandoned for quite some time, which is never a good sign for someone who wants to go exploring in any abandoned building.

You test the durability of the floor boards you currently stand on. It seems solid, and thankfully not hollow. It will serve okay for someone of your weight.

Okay, deep breaths...

You leap across to the other side, letting out a huge sigh as you realize you made it without falling into the near abyss. You look back at the hole one more time before pressing forward. What the hell, Joey? Is he even here, or is this some kind of prank? This place is dead silent other than the sound of a reel somewhere nearby in the building and the dripping of some kind of liquid (most likely ink). It is really unsettling how dead silent it really is in this place. You would have thought that at least someone would be here. If not, why did you receive a letter to come to this place in the first place?

Not a single soul can be seen or heard. Gears churn in the distance as they work together to keep a machine or whatever running. How many other former coworkers received letters from Joey? How many came back? How many responded? What was it that Joey wanted you to see? What is this "surprise?" It is all so confusing as all these questions buzz in your head. The walls and floors are really old and does not seem as if they are all that well taken care of. They take on a yellowish tint when they used to be that of a light oak.

Looking around, you notice just how much ink is covering the floors. It is just like a flood of it occurred recently, because you know what it looks like after a flood. You were in Florida for a couple weeks. The weather there is a monster. Hurricane Michael occured recently and wiped out near cities. Needless to say, you are not going back there for a long time, nor will you ever even think of getting a job there.

Thinking of jobs, what kind of job did Henry get after he left? Did he become an animator for Disney, another company, or did he pick up something entirely different from the animation industry? You really hope he did not receive a letter and is out there somewhere with a good family - a loving wife and kids. He was your best friend, even if he considered Joey his. You did not get so lucky love wise. No guy you have found was right for you. Guess you just have back luck. Almost as bad as the people who continued to work for Joey.

How many other people left before this place went to shit? Were you the last one to get "outta here!" as Wally put it? You really miss that guy, he was hilarious. You hope he left too before the shit hit the fan. He and Thomas were a comedy to listen to. When they bickered at each other, it was a sight to see. They would go back and fourth, and highly exaggerate things like, "this pipe is wracking up a flood!! What the hell are yah doin' Wally???" Everyone here was a sensation with the exception of a select few before Joey started messing things up. Susie used to be as sweet as she was beautiful, Sammy used to be chipper and encouraged his musical team to try again, and just about everything was brighter. Even the animations got done on time.
