Riley's POV
As I pried my gaze away from Virgil's maniacal stare,
I then shifted my gaze to the still sobbing Sabrina and began to form my next course of action in my mind of what to do next, but as I made my way to kneel next to the others who were surrounding Sabrina, Virgil then knelt down as well, with urgency painted on his face "Sabrina? Are-- are you okay?!" If I hadn't known any better I'd have thought his concern was genuine. But luckily, I did know better...
Virgil's POV
As I knelt down next to Riley and sympathetically asked if Sabrina was alright, not really awaiting any particular answer, I could tell she'd finally seen through my little innocent acting, pfft took her long enough. She acted like more of a blonde then a ginger. And I could also sense now much anxiety she was feeling. I don't know how she was even functioning to be honest. But now, at least the fun part of all of this can begin...
Riley's POV
I had a plan. Not necessarily a good plan considering I just conjured it up out of thin air thirty seconds ago, but a bad plan was better then no plan at all, right? As I leaned in closer to Sabrina, I then turned to Marissa who was on my left and said in a stern whisper "--Can you buy me five minutes?" She ruffled her brows as she whispered back at me, obviously confused "Riley they're about to call us on stage in like--" she paused for a moment as a booming voice came over the intercom that said "Thirty seconds. All performers to the stage in thirty seconds, thank you." She shifted her gaze from the speaker back to me as she whispered back " --IN LIKE THIRTY SECONDS! " I reached over and grabbed her hand as I looked intently into her soft brown eyes " it's not for me. Its to make things right with Sabrina. I need to make things right Marissa. Please." She stared at me blankly for a moment, before I saw a familiar warm greet me as she replied a little louder, "I'll do one better, I'll make it ten." I felt a grin creep into my face as I leaned closer to her and hugged her tightly while whispering a quick "thank you," before jumping to my feet and grabbing Sabrina's hand and pulling her forcefully to her feet, she stared back at me, tear stains covering her face still as she raised an eye brows at me, obviously still angry and very confused. I knew Marissa hadn't the slightest idea what I was doing, but I'm assuming by the fact that she'd agree to buy me ten minutes to talk to Sabrina that she knew I was doing something I should. As Sabrina blinked her eyes in an effort to slow her tears, she then muttered a very irritated "What?" At me, then before she had a moment to protest, I dragged her into a nearby dress room and slammed the door closed behind us, we were both silent for a few seconds, the small room only filled with the sound of our panting breaths from sprinting...
Then after about a minutes time I noticed Sabrina was gripping her chest and was still a little short of breath, Mhm I know what that means, an anxiety attack, probably self induced by her own anger to be quite honest. She looked up at me silently, as I then rummaged through my sweatshirt pockets me pulled out a pill bottle and unscrewed the lid, handing her two little red pills "Here, this'll help," I muttered as I put them in her shaky hand, she used a nearby stool to help her stand up straighter as she braced her elbow on it and signed while putting the two pills in her mouth and unscrewing the cap of her water bottle "I didn't know you still took these," her tone sounded skeptical, but I waved her off as I replied with a mere "mhm," before I then raised my gaze to hers and saw the anger that still lurked within her dialated pupils, "I..." I began, before taking a deep breath and lowering my gaze to my feet as I continued, "okay look, first things first... I am so sorry. You were right, for the past six months I have been living in my own big stupid pity party, I know with what happened, It hurt you guys too... and," I paused as I raised my gaze to hers, her eyes still looked angry but her expression just looking blank, "and? " she said, raising an eyebrow, "is that all you had to say because if so--" She attempted to reach for the door but I stopped her and began stuttering, trying desperately to find the right words "--n-no Sabrina please w-wait I-I-really need to tell you something, look I am really trying here okay?! I know what a bitch I've been but please--" Sabrina put her hands on my shoulders as I stuttered in frustration, I could feel tears burning in the corners of my eyes, then she lifted my chin up with her index finger and I saw a huge smirk on her face "I never said you were a bitch... But I did kinda enjoy seeing you feel so guilty." I gave a weak smile back at her as she continued, her tone now more serious "Okay okay you're forgiven, but what's up, for real?" her gaze turned from caring to concerned as I began to speak, but before I could finish my first sentence, Ethan opened the door with a nervous smile "Hey, I really hate to interrupt you guys but uh, Marissa's running out of things to say to the crowd, she said you guys got five more minutes to fi--" I cut him off with a friendly smile "Tell her no problem, I'll only need two ." He returned my warm smile and gave us a thumbs up before closing the door behind him. I refocused my gaze to Sabrina as I said plainly "Its about Virgil," Sabrina's blank stare soon turned curious as she mumbled a mere "Oh?" In reply. "He's been playing us, ALL of us..." Her gaze shifted away from me and darted a million different directions as she placed her hands on her head, After a moment she refocused her gaze on me "What? You okay?"
I questioned, as Sabrina now seemed more anxious then a moment ago, "Yeah just... What do you mean? " "Earlier today I got call from my professor about the dorms," Sabrina's face brightened with excitement, "But when he told me I didn't get the dorm, I got a little emotional, so I went up to my room... But then Patton came to bring me downstairs because he said they had a 'surprise' for me," Sabrina was now intently awaiting me to continue, her curiosity overtaking her nerves "and? " she asked impatiently, "Thomas said that I could stay at his place for a cheap rent so that I could go to college, and I was so overwhelmed with emotions that it caught me totally off guard when Virgil stood up and made a whole scene where he was stuttering and nervous and handed me an 'apology card' because we'd 'started off on the wrong foot'... " Sabrina's gaze slowly lowered as she then muttered "Just like when he apologized to me and Marissa and the others and was all stuttery and nervous," I only replied with a simple "Mhm" at the realization that now she had begun to catch on, "That little two faced shit!" She snapped, before raising her gaze to me suddenly and asking with a newfound urgency "Do you have the letter? " I frantically scrambled through my sweatshirt pockets for a moment before pulling it out and handing it to her "Yeah, why?" As she opened it and read it silently for a brief moment she then said "Cause this is what I'm gonna use to convince the others," I raised my brow, "They won't believe what I just told you?" Sabrina let out a defeated sigh before replying "Afraid not, Riles. Em Ethan and Heather out there believe his suck up apology hook-line-and-sinker...especially Em. " I looked back at her with an amused smirk and muttered an accusatory reply "And you didn't believe it hook-line-and-sinker?" She punched my arm as she replied with a smug smirk "Okay. Look! Now's not the time for accusations aight? And for your information I was more skeptical of that emo eye shadowed freak then any of you at the beginning! I was just, hoping he was sincere, but obviously we have been proved otherwise." She waved the letter in the air while speaking the last part, before I nodded and said "Okay, fair" we exchanged serious glances for a brief moment before I mumbled a hopeless "Well what now?" Sabrina got a crack of a smile on her face as she put her hand on my shoulder and said "We go back out there--" I butted in by saying, anxiety lacing my tone "I am NOT going out there and dancing--" Sabrina hushed me as she placed her index finger to my lips and said with a smirk, "No. You don't have to dance, me and Marissa will do the dancing... " I raised my brow, obviously not following what she was leading into, "You," she began, as she pointed her index finger to my nose, " just need to do one thing, " I raised my brow further as if to silently ask "and that is?" She now had an enormous grin on her face "How good are your improv skills? " I felt a smirk appear on my face as I replied cheerily, now realizing the plan "Rusty. But believable." She grabbed my car keys from my pocket and said with her smirk growing "Good. Believable is all we'll need. After we get you in a room by yourself, sneak out and take the freeway home and I'll catch the others up on everything but we'll keep up the act and play dumb, ya got all that? " I nodded quickly as she shoved my car keys back into my pocket and said "k. It's show time!" Next thing I knew Sabrina grabbed my hand and we burst through the door to see a very surprised Ethan, Heather and Virgil, as we were walking past them I fell to my knees, gripping my ankle as I yelled out a muffled "Agh! Fuck!" I looked up for a moment and winked to Sabrina before lowering my head back to the floor, I forced fake tears to flood my face as I gripped my ankle and winced in apparent pain. "Holy shit Riles, are you okay?! " I felt Sabrina's hand hover over my back as she knelt beside me, soon after Ethan and Heather were at my side as well, though I took note that Virgil hung back, simply watching blankly from a few feet away where he still stood, "Riley! Oh my God are you alright?!" It was Heather, her hand gripping my shoulder from behind, I tried to keep my breaths quick and short as to really sell the whole "I just unexpectedly fell and broke my ankle " vibe, y'know? I made my voice shaky as I stuttered a reply "I...I think it's broken... " Ethan shifted in front of me as he began overlooking the ankle that I was still gripping tightly, and as he put pressure on the place I had been holding he asked cautiously "Does it hurt when I push here?" I winced in fake pain as he looked from me to Heather and muttered "If nothing else it's definitely sprained." before anyone could react, I heard a concerned Marissa come sprinting off of the stage and rushing next to Ethan as she panted a frantic "WHAT....HAPPENED?! " Sabrina was the first to reply as she sounded on the verge of tears "Me and Riles were rushing to get on stage with you but she fell and twisted her ankle, " Damn. Nice acting Sab. Marissa then uttered a genuine "Oh my god" Then placed the back of her hand on my forehead as if an effort to see if I was still responsive, when I raised my gaze to meet hers she didn't look concerned but rather...confused? Her silent stare as if asking me "What are you two up to?" I gave her a quick wink and muttered a convincing "i'm okay" before lowering my head in "pain" once again and letting a small squeak of my "suffering" escape my lips. I then felt Sabrina lean down and whisper in my ear "What 're you goin' for here Riles, an Oscar?" I had to fight the urge to laugh and instead just doubled over once more, pretending my pain was now intensifying. Sabrina had obviously caught on that I was struggling to keep the act up, so she began speaking to Ethan "Yo Ethan, Why don't you help Riles to the dressing room so she can rest and me and Marissa can try to salvage the partners dance? " Ethan silently nodded to Sabrina and began to wrap my arm around his neck and slowly help me to my feet. As Ethan helped me to the dressing room I caught Virgil's stare, he was shooting me daggers, if looks could kill i'd be dead... once we were in the dressing room I said a kind thank you to Ethan and waited until I could no longer hear his footsteps, and my paranoia told me to lock the door, but I shoved that thought aside, knowing I had no reason for doing so, then as I began to double check my pockets for everything that I'd need... Phone... check. Keys... check. Antidepressants...
As I was rummaging through my pockets to find the pill bottle from earlier, a sudden knock on the door jumped me back into reality, just as I was about to shout a simple "Who is it?" I felt my stomach turn, and an uneasy tension start to fill the room... It was Virgil. I backed away from the door, being sure to remain as quiet as humanly possible while doing so, and just as I heard the doorknob start to turn, I then heard Sabrina's loud voice shout towards the figure at the door who I was almost certain was Virgil, "Hey Virgil! I think Ethan needs you on stage!" And after that, I reached in my pockets, found the pill bottle, and with that... I made a fast Sprint to the parking lot.
