Riley's POV
Hours passed and we played nearly every card game that I could possibly think of: Spades, war, crazy eights, double solitaire, rummy. None of which might I add was I remotely good at.
But it kept my mind occupied, so I wasn't complaining. Then as we came to the end of what must've been the twentieth game of spades we had played, of course Virgil winning yet again, my mind began to drift back into realities dark truths, as Virgil shuffled the deck in his hands repeatedly.
"What're you thinking about?" His voice startled me, probably because we had played most of the games with nothing but the sound of silence and the air conditioner. "Uh, nothing. Just..."
I sighed, "Why do I even bother trying to keep anything from you? Obviously you're gonna pry." Virgil looked offended, but remained silent "It's just-- well, there's no more dancing. Let's just leave it at that." I reluctantly pried my gaze away from his, as I then switched off my emotions and then smiled back at him fakely "So, spades again or another round of rummy?" He stopped shuffling the cards for a moment as I stared at them intently, hoping desperately that he'd just start to deal them, but instead he then cleared his throat and shifted his weight on the edge of the bed "Look, Riley. If you need to talk I'm here for you..." My gaze hardened, as I was still staring intently at the cards in his hand, wanting so badly to do nothing more then scream and shout and curse at him. But instead I muttered a not-at-all genuine "Thank you," before I then nodded towards the cards and said "So uh, you gonna deal those or not?" Virgil glanced down at the cards in his hand, before he then shoved them in his sweatshirt pocket and muttered a soft "Uh ya know what? We've played enough for a while I think I'll just, uh..."
He stood up from the bed and made his way to the door before he continued, "Give you some alone time..."
And without another word spoken, he left. Closing the door behind him as he did. I sat in the room for a long while. Alone. Feeling the eery silence around me only grow as even the air conditioning had now paused its usually obnoxious rumbling.
The reality of everything now just setting in. The tears now, they were silently littering my face as I stifled my sobs and stared blankly at the door Virgil had just used to exit my room.
I stared at that door for what felt like hours, well that is I did until...
"My my, aren't you a sad, sad sight to be seen..." The pitch of the voice sounded oddly familiar. Virgil I thought, feeling panicked. No. It couldn't be. I saw him leave. I've been staring at the door...
Before I had the chance to turn and spot the possessor of this mystery voice, I felt a hand cover my mouth.
Did I scream? I thought to myself, now feeling slightly confused and less frightened. The voice leaned close to my ear as it whispered, it's tone rich with amusement "Yes, yes you did."
Then, we remained in a state of tense silence for what felt like ten minutes, although I'm sure it was much less then that, before the voice finally spoke once more "Now, will you be a good girl and not scream when I remove my hand?" Not knowing how else to react, I held my breath and forced myself to nod "Wise decision." The voice hissed in reply. And moments later, their hand slowly loosened around my lips,
which is when I noticed it... Gloves? Yellow gloves? I turned around and came face to face with who I at first mistook for Virgil, but immediately was corrected as he tilted his head and pointed to his scaly face, as if reading my mind "Oh no dear, I am MUCH more pleasant to be around then that sad bag of bones you are thinking of..." Followed by him giving me a halfhearted smirk, which was when I'd noticed his sharp teeth and forked tongue "A-and you are?" I mumbled softly while backing away from him calmly, trying not to seem at all shaken up "Oh dear, are you really serious?"
His tone was laced with underlying motives, "Yeah I'm serious, Thomas didn't uh... Mention you?" I looked him up and down, his formal black and yellow attire and fancy fedora confused me "You're very... Different then the others, aren't you?" he chuckled,
"Well yes, and in many ways better too."
Huh, seems like someone's a little too in love with themselves... I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes. Which only caused him to laugh louder, "You're cute but you aren't very bright, are you?" I glared at him with a mixture of agitation and confusion "Oh dear, such a pity I have to spoil it so soon...
I read your THOUGHTS! You see, I am Thomas's Dec-" but just as he was about to reveal his identity, a distant screech from the end of the hall started coming closer "Is that... Logan...?" I said aloud, before sure enough, logic himself burst through the door to my room pointing an accusing finger at the formally dressed fedora wearing side. "Umm..."
Was all I could say, before Thomas, Roman and Patton all followed Logan into my room "SEE? I TOLD YOU!" Shouted a very angry Logan. Romans face quickly became disgusted, and Patton let out an awful gasp. "WHAT? WHO IS HE?!" I shouted, not enjoying being the only clueless one in the room.
Thomas shot me a surprised glare and said "you may wanna plug your ea--"
Logan pointed again at the stranger and screeched loudly "DECEEEIIITTT!!"
And yes in case you were wondering...
I plugged my ears, but perhaps a little too late. "Deceit?" I repeated as I looked at him again. The new side now known as Deceit chuckled, before removing his yellow glove and extending his hand out to me, which
I reluctantly shook as he replied
"But more casually known as Janice, at least, that's what my friends call me."
He smirked, as I repeated his name aloud once more, "What are you doing here Deceit?" groaned a very annoyed Thomas as he shook his head, seeming frustrated "Well Thomas, your poor house guest here was crying, all alone in her room..." My face reddened as I lowered my gaze, feeling all of their gazes now shift to me as he continued "And considering none of you bothered to check on her, I had to take it upon myself..." Roman grabbed my hand gently "Riley I... I'm sorry, you should've said something." Logan pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and nodded in agreement "I must agree with Roman, we cannot simply know if something is wrong unless you tell us Riley." I let out a weak sigh and smiled fakely "I know, I know. But it's not like its anything serious guys..." Thomas gave me a cheery smile as he mumbled softly "Are you sure? You know you can always talk to me, right?" I nodded and smiled once more, "Yes I'm sure Thomas. Really, thank you though...
It's just-- hormones and friendships and stress... Nothing critical." Patton and Thomas both hugged me and smiled, before Thomas then shooed them all out of my room to give me space, then as I went to close my door to what I thought was an empty hallway- instead I was greeted by a worried face...
"You lie about as well as Deceit does when he's drunk..." I couldn't help but laugh at Virgil's sarcasm "Is that bad?"
I asked, smiling "Pfft, you tell me...
Last time we both got drunk he tried convincing me that eating pizza gave you the power of telepathy," I rolled my eyes and pointed at him "But did you believe him though?" He raised his hands, as if he'd been accused of something "Hey, there wasn't any pizza left the next morning. Or Vodka. I'll let you draw your own conclusions,"
I giggled "Touche." there was a long pause, before I then heard my phone buzz and glanced down at it
"oh shit," I muttered, seeming both surprised and annoyed.
Virgil's tone seemed serious as he replied, but I could sense his underlying sarcasm "Anyone worth talking to more then me?" I ignored his last statement as I quickly replied "No, no it's nothing to do with that, It's just... Business. Sorry, excuse me for just a quick minute." He nodded casually "Sure, take your time." and I quickly slunk back into my room, slowly and awkwardly closing the door in Virgil's face as he just watched. And that's when I had to force myself to take a deep breath and hit the answer button "Uh, hey Danny... It's uh... Been a while."
