A couple of weeks had passed and Alex had still not woken up. I hated not seeing her around the apartment and or going to work with her. I still visited her everyday at the hospital. Work had been slow since the incident, so it dragged a bit more. Mateo had driven me everywhere since he found out about the acident. He had been driving me to and back from work as well as the hospital. Sometimes he would come into the club and have a drink at the bar just to see me. He knew that he was being a little bit overwhelming, but the incident with Levi made him a bit worried. Having Scott at work more wasn't helping the case that I was just fine being alone at work.
Finally, it was Sunday and I was here closing with Scott. I was counting the money in the registers on the second floor patio when Scott came to sit across for me. The streets lights and twinkly lights illuminated the patio.
"What's up, Scott? I'm almost done," I said as I finished counting the money.
Scott waited for me to finish before he said, "Okay, I need a favor."
My curiosity peaked, and I furrowed my eyebrows, "Hm, I'm interested. What could you want from me?"
A small smile came across his face, and he ran his hand through his hair before saying, "I need you to come in tomorrow and help with inventory. Alex used to do it, but since she can't I was thinking that you could. I'll get you food or something. You'll get the managers pay..."
"Uh..." I thought about it for a second, "Okay I want all of that, and we can switch my day off for another day." I smiled and raised my head for my victory.
Scott chuckled, stood up, and walked over to me. He stuck out his hand and said, "Deal."
I put the money on the table and stood up. I started to laugh and began to shake his hand, "Don't I drive a hard bargain?"
"Extremely hard, I thought I was going to have to bring the lawyers out to help me negotiate the deal." He joked.
"I think I could beat your lawyers too. I was just going easy on you." I teased back.
"Oh no, you don't have to go easy on me. I would actually prefer that you would go hard on me. Give me a challenge woman!" Scott said and stepped closer to me.
"Listen boss man, I don't want to lose my job. As your employee, I think, by law, I have to go easy on you as long as I want to keep my job." I said as I realized that we had stopped shaking hands and were now holding hands. I glanced down at my hands and slowly took my hand out of his.
"Sofia, your job is never going to be at jeopardy with me," he paused. "You could be rude to me, you could mock me, and you could even slap me. I would hope that you don't do the last one, but if it ever came down to it I would understand that it would be for a good reason." Scott smiled down at me, and couldn't help but look up at him laugh.
"Don't be ridiculous! I would never slap you. You've never given me a reason to slap. If you ever do give me a reason, I'm glad that I would still have my job." I said and noticed how close we were. I stepped back and bent over to grab the money from the table. I straightened myself, turned back around, and handed him the money, "Here is your money."
He paused to look at my hand before he took the money, "Thank you, I'm glad you're handing me my money."
"That's what I do." I shrugged, "Okay Scott, I should get going. Mateo is going to be here soon, and I should be downstairs to meet him." I then turned around and started to leave that patio.
"Hey Sofia," Scott said and grabbed me by the elbow.
I turned around to face him, "Did I forget anything?"
"What do you see in him? Out of all the guys that are interested in you, you chose him?" Scott said and his touch lingered on my arm.
"I didn't really chose him. I was, kinda, thrown at him. " A huge smile came across my face as I paused, "I gave him a chance, and it worked out, really well. He...makes me happy." The thought of him alone made blush.
"I'm sure other people can make you just as happy if not more. You do know what he used to do right?" Scott pestered.
"I don't need anyone else to be happy. I'm happy with him, and I don't need anyone else to make me happier. Yeah I know what he used to do, and he doesn't do it anymore. 'Used to' is the key word in your questioning, "I said, and stepped away from him and walked downstairs to get my stuff.
I went to the bathroom right away to change into my light wash jeans and green cop top t-shirt with black nikes. When I finished, I walked to the front door, and I saw Mateo standing against the entrance door on his phone. He wore a simple pair of fitted jeans with a red flannel over a white t-shirt and vans. It wasn't until I got closer that he looked up from his phone and saw me. He gave me a huge smile and put his phone in his pocket. I returned his smile, and took his extended hand. I sneezed his hand, and pulled him down to kiss me by his shirt. Mateo didn't fight me and wrapped his arms around me to deepen this kiss.
"Nice to see you too," he said as we parted.
"Yeah," I paused, "it's just been a long day. Why didn't you text me that you were here? Have you been waiting long?"
"I actually just got here. I was finishing a few texts before you got here." He smiled down at me as we walked outside.
I sighed and leaned into as we walked over to his car. Mateo opened the door and helped me get in. When Mateo got in he put on some music and we drove off.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
"I was thinking that we could go back to my place." Mateo placed over at me and gave me a worth-wild smile.
I liked to lean back into my seat and look over at him. I had his hand on my lap and I traced his palm with my fingers. I placed my hand against his and I noticed how small I was again his. Mateo noticed this and closed our hands together. This felt simple and peaceful. The silence wasn't awkward, but comfortable. I liked the silence.
When we reached his place, I noticed a couple coming out of the building. They looked like a perfect couple. They looked like they were in a picture frame. I smiled as they passed by us, but Mateo ignored them as we passed.
"Did you actually get tenants? People are, actually, living in those empty apartments that you made?" I teased him as we waited for the elevator. When we entered, I saw him type his code into the elevator. "Is your code special?"
Mateo chuckled, "Yes, I actually got some work done. I have a few more applicants to look over for this building." He paused and backed me into the wall. His fingers lightly traced my jaw and traveled down to the middle of my chest, "Yes, my code is special. Only the people that need it know it."
I hated that he was teasing me and even the slightest touch of his drove my mind to all the thing that he could do to me. "Do you I need it?"
His thumb ran over my bottom lip and said, "You tell me."
Before I could've said anything, the doors opened and Mateo smirked and grabbed my hand to pull me into his apartment. He pulled me against his and we started to sway from side to side as we laughed. We moved over to the couch and he turned so that I could fall on top of him. I straddled him, and laid on his chest.
"So do you?" Mateo asked and prompted himself on his elbows, and I propped up myself up on my arms.
"Do I what? Do I want to know your apartment code?" I asked and furrowed my eyebrows.
"Yes! Thats the question." Mateo exaggerated and fell back on the couch.
I stayed leaning over him and shrugged, "Okay, I guess."
Mateo started laughing, and pulled me down to kiss him. We kept kissing until he heard the elevator door open. I immediately got off of his lap and sat next to him on the couch.
I saw a girl coming in with a duffle bag with her hand covering her eyes. She dropped her bag down next to her and said in a very loud and clear voice, "Is it safe?"
Mateo groaned, "Stop being over dramatic. I want to introduce you to someone."
    Wait, hold up. Introduce?
Both Mateo and I got off of the couch and we walked over to the girl. She started to chuckle and uncovered her eyes.
"Venessa this is Sofia, and Sofia this is a Venessa my sister."Mateo introduced us and I was immediately engulfed in a hug.    I hesitated before hugging her back.
"Hey it's nice to meet you." I hesitated.
Venessa got let go of me and stepped back, "Sorry. It's just exciting to meet you. Mateo hasn't mentioned much of you, but when he does mention you I can that you mean a lot to him."
That warmed my heart, "He talks about me?" I asked and nudged him with my shoulder.
"Yeah," Mateo said and shrugged. "You're important to me, you know that."
"Augh, you're gross. It was nice meeting you, but I'm going to go put my stuff in my room." Venessa said and walked passed us to go up the stairs with her duffle bag.
"Where did she come from?" I asked once I heard a door close.
"She was sleeping over one of her friends house for a while. She texted me that she was coming home tonight." He shrugged and dragged me back to the couch. He sat down and I stood in between in his legs. Mateo hands rested on my hips.
One of my hands rested on his shoulder and the other one ran threw his hands. I loved how soft and thick his hair was. I could tell that whatever product he had was wearing off now. I noticed how Mateo was relaxing into my hands and yawned.
"You should go to sleep," I paused, "I could go home. It's okay." I checked the time on my phone and noticed that it was almost one in the morning.
"You should stay over. You have some clothes here that I washed for you." Mateo pulled me closer to him. "I would like it if you stayed the night."
The way he looked at me with such sincerity that it made my heart melt. "You sure?"
"Yes, please hermosa." He said, and I knew that there was no point in arguing because I knew that I wanted to stay.
    "What about your sister?"
"What about her? We'll be in our room and she'll be in hers. In the morning we'll just meet up in the kitchen. Everything will be fine." Mateo stood up and started to lead me to the staircase.
I didn't fight him and followed him up the stairs with a big smile on my face.
I was used to staying over at Mateo's house that we had somewhat of a routine. Mateo would change and wait for me in bed while I washed off my makeup and changed into one of his large t-shirts. The clothes that I left here sometimes were in one of Mateo's empty closet space. I had texted Elena and told her that I was going to stay over Mateo's place again. She replied and told me to use condoms, and I rolled my eyes and didn't reply. I was on the pill and took it every morning at eleven. I've been keeping it in my bag at all times.
I stepped out of the bathroom and found Mateo laying on his stomach with his head resting on the pillow. He was wearing his white pajama bottoms, and I could see the muscles in his arms and back flexed. I walked over and climbed into bed. I got under the blanket and laid down next to him. He seemed fast asleep, and I couldn't help but lightly trace the muscles of his back.
Mateo squirmed and goosebumps came across his skin. "Stop that tickles."
    I chuckled and stopped, "Sorry."
Mateo got under the blanket and pulled me closer to him so that I would lay on his chest. "It's okay. I liked it. It's a nice way to wake up."

He tightened his grip on me momentarily before we both relaxed into each other for the night.
