Today is the day, that about five years ago, Katherine had given me her List which evidently is also my birthday. My mother called earlier, but I dodged the call and listened to her voicemail. As I did with Faith, although I'd never told her my birthday — I hate birthdays because I think they are selfish. Gifts are nice, I just hate the idea of getting gifts — but if it's a bomb gift I'll definitely take it.

"So what's up with you and Faith?" Katherine asks as she walks out of the bathroom, setting JT down on the couch cushion beside her.

"Uh, we're good, yeah. She's actually Uri's date to Xenia's wedding...." I draw out.

Katherine gives me a sincere smile. "Should I have waited on my answer? I mean I'd offer to switch with her, you know if her date was anyone else on the planet."

I chuckle. "It's alright, I think she's just happy that she's invited to a family function. I don't really like to talk about my family."

"How come?"

I shrug. "It's a touchy subject."

"I get it, you don't wanna talk about it. Completely understandable, I've had enough family drama to comprehend 'touchy subjects'."

"It's not that — it's not like I knocked some girl up and my mom paid her to stay away from me or anything."

Katherine smiles. "Okay, Ezra Fitz."

I roll my eyes. "No it's just, well when I was fifteen I found out that Aram isn't my dad."

"Step-dad?"

"Bingo." I say. "My mom had me in high school and dropped out or something, I don't know the whole story. I never really asked, Ma."

"Do you know anything about your birth father?" Katherine asks, setting JT in her lap and placing his jacket on. She seems genuinely concerned and curious. It's nice.

"Not much, just that he died before I was born." I tell her.

Katherine looks up at me. "Oh, I'm sorry." Her shoulders fall and she gives me a sympathetic look before placing JT's hat on his head.

"I don't like this hat." JT complains as he looks up at his mother.

"Dzheĭms Tiberiĭ Robŭrt·s," Katherine says to him and JT seems to understand. "ne se oplakvaĭ."

"Sŭzhalyavam," he pouts. Katherine kisses his cheek and he smiles, kissing her cheek back.

There is a knock on my door, "Can you get that?" Katherine asks. "It's probably Simon."

PASTA AISLE GUY.

I nod and get up to open the door. I twist the knob to see a slender young man, most likely early twenties, standing before me. He has curly brown hair and a large pair of glasses on.
