Episode 42: City Tour
"New York really is a rather interesting place, huh dear?" Rosalie questioned with her arm looped through her husband's. He was gazing ahead but a subtle smile teased the corners of his lips as she squashed herself closer to him. The light in his eyes brightened at her childish antics before he surrendered and nodded in agreement.
Nicholas looked over at his parents with a light laughter leaving him.
Emily glanced up, wondering what in the world was so funny about what his mother had said.
He caught her expression and shook his head.
"It's just that-" An awfully throaty cough forced itself between his words, making Emily suddenly conscious of the cold wind. She didn't want him coming down with anything so she took the necessary initiative. Slipping her small hand into his large one that swung beside her, the woman then stuffed it inside her padded jacket.
Nicholas spared her a heartfelt smile for a moment before continuing on.
"To put it simply, mom likes to be a bit of a drama queen about simple things like this. Might I tell you, she's been here so many times that I've lost count. It baffles me as to why she's speaking as if it's her first time visiting."
"Ah, shut up!" Rosalie scolded jokingly and Nicholas fake gasped accordingly.
For someone who was labelling another to be a drama queen he was coming in close as he turned to Emily with his hand on his heart.
"Did you hear that?"
She gave him a halfhearted squeeze of his hand, making his shoulders fall as he realized she wasn't going to take his side.
"I've never even had the chance to walk around and see the city like this," His mother indicated with an enthusiastic hand towards the people surrounding them, "Not to mention how lovely this park is. It makes me feel like I've been here before because of how nostalgic everything is."
"Maybe in your dreams," Nicholas mused as he brought a thoughtful finger to his chin.
"The last time you were all here, you opted for staying at home to watch your favourite show on the couch, calling it a "priority" instead of coming with us here to Central Park."
"Well, I guess I stand corrected." She admitted with a dose of sarcasm.
"Though I still agree that Real Housewives of New York City is a top priority of mine."
Her son snorted.
The act really shouldn't have been as attractive to Emily, but it was.
Now she was being really pathetic.
"Of course you'd prefer to indulge in staged drama."
"Hey," she clicked her tongue, "Staged or not, it's hilarious."
Giving up the argument, Nicholas decided to stare out into the distance silently.
"But Central Park really is something else. Gives you a break from the crowded streets and allows you to enjoy some alone time."
Emily nodded in agreement.
"Did you know that this is the largest and most important public park in Manhattan?"
"It's that significant?" Paul aired quietly.
Emily was delighted whenever he spoke to her, being as he rarely ever did. She realized he was just naturally introverted. But she couldn't help but feel all giddy when he acknowledged her so she did her best to impress him.
