AUGUST P.O.V. –

“Dr. Maraj.”

I knocked on the door that separated the waiting room from the office, which was locked. I had knocked earlier but got no answer, so I just waited in one of the chairs for her to come out. I figured she was busy prepping for today’s patients. But ten minutes, turned into twenty. Twenty into thirty. And that’s when I got worried.

“Dr. Maraj.” I called a little bit louder and knocked a little harder. Still there was no answer. Something didn’t seem right so I decided to jump over the desk and go back there.

“Dr. Maraj.” I called out looking for any sight or sound of her.

I felt my heartbeat speed up, as I entered her office but she wasn’t there.

I went into the operating room and saw her plugged up to the Laughing Gas machine. No one else was here, so I’m more than certain she had done it herself.

“Dr. Maraj.” I quickly removed the mask from her face and tapped her cheek to wake her up. Her eyes were opening and closing. Like she was trying not to go to sleep.

“I’m sorry mommy.” She grabbed my face and gave a huge smile. “Do you forgive me?”

“Did you do this?” I asked her, shaking her face slightly.

“I never knew you had a beard mommy.” She looked at me sideways with crazy eyes. “We gotta shave that. Let me get the--.” She wobbled in the chair.

“No, you stay right here.” I held her, while trying to look and see how high the volumes of gas were on the valve. It was pass the legal limit. I had to call the paramedics, if I didn’t, it could lead to permanent brain damage for her.

She all of sudden started to cry into my chest. “Why did you have to die mommy?”

I took my cellphone out my pocket and dialed 911. I told them where we were and what happened.

I stayed with her for the fifteen minutes until the paramedics arrived, while she went through various stages of emotions and kept talking gibberish. It was some how all about her mother though.

Two paramedics arrived. The white woman asked me…

 “What happened to her?”

“I came into the office this morning and she had sedated herself.”

“Is she the dentist here?”

“Yes.”

They took her from me and put her on the stretcher.

Once they had took her away and I answered a few more questions, I called all the patients and told them their appointments would be cancelled.

I saw the door open. And an older black lady, she looked about 65 came in.

“You must be August. Dr. Maraj was telling me about you. I’m Norma the nurse here.” She greeted me with a hug.

“Yeah. Umm the paramedics just took her away. I came in and she had sedated herself.”
