candy store

"I honestly don't understand officer. I locked up last night, like I do every night, and this morning I got here and everything was destroyed.." you sighed, biting your nail while you stood outside on a busy Brooklyn street, while police tape cordoned off your small sweet store.

You'd moved to New York from a small town not too far away, but the big city had always enticed you. It wasn't until you saw an ad in the newspaper about a small building up for rent on 13th Avenue that you'd finally pushed yourself to open your very own little store. It wasn't a worldwide chain, but you had your regular customers and it was the first time in your life you could safely say you enjoyed your job.
However, your heart had sank when you arrived at 7:30AM on a Wednesday morning to find the glass front of your candy store completely shattered. All the money was taken from the tills and the whole place completely trashed.

"I promise we'll do everything we can to try and find who did this, ma'am. The detectives should be here shortly, you'll have to give a statement to them too, if that's okay?" The young officer replied, jotting a few things down before looking back up at you.
"Yeah sure, that's fine. Thank you for your help.." you sighed. He smiled at you apologetically, before ducking under the tape and joining the other officers in searching the premises.

You slumped down on the sidewalk, head in your hands, exhaling with disappointment. God knows how much this was going to cost to repair, you could only hope the insurance would cover the majority of the cost.
As you watched your breath turn to white wisps in the cold morning air, you saw a black car pull up directly in front of you, and a brown haired guy stepped out. You saw his detectives badge almost immediately, and you stood up to greet him.

"Hey, you must be (Y/N), the owner right?" He asked, giving you a warm smile, and you couldn't help feeling a tiny bit better in his presence.
"Yeah, that's me.." you replied, holding your hand out as he shook it firmly.
"Nice to meet you. My name is Jake. You should really call me Detective Peralta but, who cares for formal names, amirite?" He asked, giving me awkward finger guns. I chuckled slightly.

He smiled, before almost doing a double take.
"Oh yeah, and this here is my colleague. I won't say friend cuz' she might kill me; Detective Diaz.."

You didn't even register the women stood by Jake's side until your gaze met hers. Her brown eyes were already studying you intensely, and you almost forgot to reply when she gave you a curt nod and a quick 'hey'.
"Hi, I'm (Y/N).." you repeated, smiling at her.
"Yeah, I uh, I heard.."
"Oh, yeah. Course.." you mumbled, feeling slightly embarrassed. You looked quickly to the ground, not noticing the small smirk that Diaz gave you at your awkwardness.

"So, uh, I know you've probably already given a statement to the officer but, would you mind giving one to us too? It's a pain is the ass, I'm sorry.." Jake apologised, as you shook your head with a smile.
"No don't worry. Anything that'll help you catch whoever did this.."

He grinned once more. "Awesome! So uh, Rosa, you take this pretty lady's statement and I'll go check out what the place looks like inside.."
"Hey, Jake, you said I could-"
"Bye!" He shouted, already bolting under the police tape and through the shattered doors.

The atmosphere fell tense, as you shifted your gaze uncomfortably to the woman, who's name was clearly Rosa, in front of you. She cleared her throat, before producing a notebook and pen from the pocket of her NYPD windbreaker.
"So uh, you ready to give this statement?"

-

It turned out that Detective Diaz, or Rosa as she had insisted you call her, wasn't nearly as intimidating as you had first thought. She was pretty easy to talk to once you got going, and it helped she looked good. Not that that had any bearing on your current situation.

"A candy store, huh?" She asked as she finished jotting down the final details of your account.
"Yeah, it's been a dream of mine since I was young.." you said shyly, brushing a strand of hair nervously behind your ear. The two of you perched on the bonnet of a NYPD car, as she tucked the notebook back into her pocket, causing you a smirk.
"Cool, how come?"
"I don't know. My granny used to own one back in my old town. I'd help her on the weekends when I was younger. I think it came from that. It sounds stupid but-"
"Nah I think it's sweet.." she said, as you looked up. She was giving you the first genuine smile in the entire hour you'd been talking to her, not just a half-smirk.

"So uh, you eat a lot of candy?" You asked quickly, looking down to hide the faint blush that had appeared on your cheeks.
"Not really. The only candy I like are Hershey's kisses.." she said quietly, chewing the inside of her cheek.
"Seriously? They're one of my favourites.." you asked excitedly, as she gave you another smile that made your stomach flip.

She opened her mouth to say something else, when you felt a gentle had being placed on your back. You looked round to see a smiling Peralta looking down at you.

"Good news. We think we got enough DNA to identify the sweet-stealer. I'm taking it to the lab to get it checked over. It shouldn't take more than a week but we'll give you a call when we hear back.."
Your heart lifted.
"Really?! Thank you so much! You're all lifesavers, I don't know what I'd have done if there was nothing for you to go by.." you said, standing yourself up as Rosa did the same.

"We better get going but, I'll speak to you the minute I hear anything.." Jake smiled at you, before climbing into the drivers seat of the car parked beside you.
You looked over at Rosa, giving her a sincere smile.
"Thanks for all your help, Detective Dia-"
"Please, call me Rosa.." she smiled, shifting in her place as she looked at you.
"Well, thank you Rosa. This is my livelihood, you might just have saved my life.." you laughed softly, as she started making her way towards the passenger side of the black car. She was almost at the door, before she turned on heel, facing you completely.

"Hey uh, I don't normally do this but, do you mind if I get your number?"

(6 years later):

"Skylar, Joey, will you slow down! Mommy can't keep up!" You shouted, as the twins hurtled into the elevator, pressing the button for the fourth floor just as you darted in.
"I think you've both had a little bit too much sugar.." you said, raising an eyebrow at the giggling children.

"But mommy, it's Halloween! We're allowed!" Skylar said, as you shook your head. The elevator chimed, and before you knew it, your two children had sprinted from the elevator into the bullpen.

"Mommy!" They shouted, as you looked up, seeing your wife grinning at the twins as they hurtled into her arms.
"Hey you two, did you have a good day with your mom?" She asked, as the two nodded vigorously.

Your eyes met hers as you wandered up to her desk, waving at Jake on the way.
"Hey babe.." she greeted.
"Hey.." you replied, kissing her gently.
Even after all these years, Rosa still made you feel weak at the knees.

"I think two little monsters have had too much sugar today.." you said, as the 4 year olds looked at you.
"You let us take some from your shop, mommy!"
"I think you took a little bit more than I intended you to!"

The giggled, before spotting Jake at the other end of the bullpen.
"Uncle Jake!"
The two ran off, as you looked at them fondly, before turning to your wife.

"I got you a present too.." you said, as Rosa looked at you in surprise.
You grinned, before pulling a bag of Hershey's Kisses from the pocket.
"I know they're your favourite.." you said, kissing her softly once more.
She opened the bag, unwrapping one treat and popping it gently in her mouth.
"And they're still as good as the first time you gave me one.."

"I love you Rosa.."
"I love you too, (Y/N).."
