"I'm sorry but I can't wear this."
"Yes you can!"
"I can't!"
"Why not?"
"It's barely a party dress, never mind a formal dress!"
"Hey, it's always good to show some professional skin, that's what I'll be doing.."
"Charles! Gross!"You flung the velvet curtains of the dressing room backwards with as much flair as you could muster. Eyes clouding, you scowled at your colleague, Charles Boyle, who's eyes were glinting with what could only describe as triumphant glee.
"Oh my goodness! This is it! This is the dress!" He all but squealed, as you rolled your eyes, crossing your arms across the silky material that (barely) covered your chest.
"Charles, there's hardly any material! What will the Commissioner of the NYPD think when one of his detectives turns up basically naked?!" You asked, gesturing to the material clinging to your figure, as if to further justify your point.
"Don't be ridiculous, it's modest enough! The sweetheart neckline and the plunge down your back really ties the whole look together. Red is definitely your colour.." He babbled, grabbing your shoulders and forcing you into a complete spin. Features still completely impassive, you turned back to the man in front of you. He looked expectant as you raised an eyebrow.
"Well? Is that it? Because you've not exactly convinced me.." You mumbled.
"(Y/N), my cousin Shiela runs a dress shop in the Mid-West. Boyle's have a natural eye for fashion-" He said solemnly, as if that would magically change your opinion.
"How many cousins do you have? They do everything.." you asked, studying your reflection in the mirror propped adjacently in the corridor of the downtown boutique. In all honesty, the dress was beautiful. It made you feel elegant, it made you feel like a girl for the first time in forever. Dressing in jeans and suitable tops while chasing criminals wasn't the most glamorous job you could have chosen; you just weren't sure if it was appropriate for such a formal event, and even more, you weren't completely sure of dressing up in front of all your friends at the precinct."Oh, well over 100. We're everywhere, I guess you could call us multi-talented. But Sheila really does have a gift, he's very successful-"
"Wait, Shiela isn't a female?" You retorted, turning back to your colleague. His brows furrowed, as if you'd asked the most ridiculous question in the world.
"No, Shiela Boyle is definitely not a female, where did you get that idea from?"
"But you said-" You watched Charles as he continued to look genuinely confused. Sighing, you shook your head, "-never mind.."His expression changed almost immediately. "I really think this is the dress. You'll look so beautiful, like a full on fairytale!" He grinned.
"A fairytale at One Police Plaza?" You deadpanned, but his enthusiasm didn't dim.
"You get it! Now come on, we've 10 minutes left of our lunch break.."
Groaning, you shut the curtain again and studied the mirror in the changing room. The "NYPD Summer Ball" was taking place on Friday night, and today was Thursday. If you didn't get this dress that Charles had picked, you wouldn't have time to try another on before you lunch break ended, meaning you'd have to come back tomorrow. On Friday's you knew Charles took Nikolaj for lunch during his break at school, meaning Gina would have to accompany you instead. Mentally weighing up your options, you decided it was probably better to get this dress. You loved Gina, no doubt about it, but shopping with her was a nightmare-one that you'd rather not re-live.Sighing, you shrugged the red dress on and hung it carefully back up on the wrought iron hanger. Slipping your clothes back on, making sure to grab your badge from the stool in the corner, you opened the curtain once more. Charles stood, waiting, a huge smile on his face.
"Are you getting the dress?" He asked, as you raised your eyebrows.
"I'm getting the dress.." you confirmed. He pumped his fist. "Boyle's know best!"-
The elevator pinged as you walked into the chaos that was the fourth floor bullpen. Surprisingly, Jake was here before you, snacking on something at his desk. Nodding to him, he waved, holding a half-eaten item out to you. "Croissant?"
"No thanks Jake, you keep it.." you said.
"Your loss.." He shrugged, shoving the rest of the pastry into his mouth. "Hey, I hear Charles found you a dress to wear tonight-" He smirked, as you set your bag down on your desk opposite.
"Yeah, we found one on our lunch break yesterday. Wait, how did you know?" You asked, shrugging your jacket off and draping it over the back of your chair.
"He wouldn't stop going on about his 'excellent taste in fashion' yesterday afternoon.." Jake sighed. You shook your head, as a small chuckle escaped your lips.
"Well, it was either choosing what Charles had picked for me, or going with Gina today.." you raised your eyebrows, as Jake's eyes widened. "Ooh, tough call.." he mumbled.
