Driving along the road,

Laughing, light and lazy.

You sit behind the wheel, but your

Hands aren't on it.

One creeps up my thigh and I smile, too lost in your eyes to

Hear the sirens or see the flashing red and blue.

You tell me how gorgeous I look tonight,

Your foot on the pedal presses down harder.

I glance out the window, cheeks delightfully warm,

But I don't notice how your focus on the road ahead has been

Lost.

I see the twinkling stars in the midnight sky,

The stars that are outshined by the sparkle in your eye,

The sparkle that outshines the headlights of the vehicle

Speeding toward us.

I look back at you,

And suddenly you're closer than before,

Closer than the churning, sick feeling in my gut.

You lean in,

I lean in.

The silence grows, only filled by our breaths and the

Deafening screech of brakes—

Our lips brush,

A horn blares—

We kiss,

We crash—

Air fills my lungs

My chest heaves.

I look for you,

You aren't there.

Maybe it was

Just a dream.

Maybe you were

Just a dream.
