EVERY TIME THE RAIN COMES DOWN

The night wore on. I wondered how Dad was doing and what everyone's reactions were to his gifts. I wondered where Sally was. But what I wondered the most was when Lock would wake up.

I stood by the window, staring out into the black night. I was angry. I was angry with Shock, Barrel, and Oogie Boogie. Yes, they hated me, but that didn't give them a right to beat up someone who didn't hate me.

Before I knew it, Lock was squirming in his sleep, whimpering and muttering something. I rushed over and sat beside him, gently taking his hand. Soon, his eyes popped open as he inhaled sharply. He started freaking out.

"Lock, Lock, Lock," I said. "Lock, sssh-ssh-ssh."

"Skelly..." Lock whimpered.

"Sssssssh," I whispered. "I'm right here, Lock."

Lock looked up at me, his eyes filled with pain and fear. "Where's...where am I?" he asked.

"You're safe, Lock," I assured. "You're perfectly safe."

Lock started to cry, and I pulled him up so he could lean on my shoulder. He started crying harder.

"It..h-hurts," Lock whispered. "It hurts..."

"You're alright," I said.

"It...it repeated itself," Lock said. "I'm scared, Skelly..."

"I'm here," I replied. "I'm right here, and I always will be."

Lock whimpered and coughed up blood. I cleaned his face and let him lay down on my lap. I stroked his hair, and he started crying even harder. He began trembling violently. There had to be some way to soothe him... I smiled and continued to stroke his hair.
