MEN CAME RUNNING toward Denfer, their fists ready to collide with his face, their swords all pointed at him. Clouds swayed in the sky, turning it to the darkest canvas. It occurred to me in that moment that Denfer was out here buying me time to run, jump, die and not let them kill me. But at what expense?

"STOP!" I commanded. The tone of my voice loud enough for everyone to turn their heads to my side. The captain and his men to not dare take a step closer to Denfer.

I paused, savoring for one last time Denfer's wild characteristics. I looked at my father, then at my mother. I hadn't even told them goodbye.

Silence. Everyone's eyes were on me.

"Magic exists and it's not evil. Your minds are," I shouted.

Denfer smiled at me. My mother continued crying. My father held her in his arms.

That was it, I thought, and took a step forward; a step toward the cliff, toward the land of death. Closing my eyes and holding my breath, I let the darkness devour me.
