Saying Ebony was nervous for school was an understatement. Today was her first day and she had no idea what to expect. The only other person she really talked to was Peter, and he was in fifth grade while she was in kindergarten. "Don't be nervous Bonnie, the other kids are gonna love you," Peter reassured. "But I don't want to meet them! I want to stay with you," she complained, sprawling across his lap in the narrow bus seat. "I promise I'll find you at lunch then we'll ride home together. It's only a few hours, I know you can do it," he said as the bus screeched to a halt outside the school. "Can you at least walk me to class?" She pleaded. "Sure," Peter said with a chuckle. They walked off the bus together and walked to the kindergarten wing of the school. "Now remember, if anyone gives you trouble then let me know, no one messes with your big brother," Peter said, jokingly flexing his arms. "I will!" Ebony giggled. "Love you sis," Peter said as he kissed her forehead and went to his own class. "Right. I can do this," Ebony said to herself as she entered the classroom. She looked around at all the other kids. All of them were in groups except one girl in the back. She had short black hair and amber eyes. Ebony decided to talk to her, knowing Peter would be happy if she made a friend. She paid no mind to the adult sitting next to the girl, assuming it was an over protective parent. "Hi, I'm Ebony," She shyly introduced herself. The girl didn't respond, just looked at the adult. The adult signed what Ebony had said. Ebony was confused at this. The girl smiled and waved at Ebony. Ebony smiled in return. Maybe making friends wouldn't be so bad. "This is Alice," the adult said. "Why are you here? I thought school was for kids," Ebony said to the adult. "I'm Alice's translator, she's deaf, meaning she can't hear so I use sign to tell her what you're saying," the adult explained. "And you communicate with your hands?" Ebony said, gesturing to her hands. "That's right," the adult said with a smile. "That's kinda cool! I mean talking with your hands must be fun! Hey maybe she could teach me sign and I could teach her self defense or how to make clothes!" Ebony said excitedly. Alice noticed how excited Ebony was and turned to her translator for an explanation. Her face lit up as the translator finished and she nodded eagerly. This was the beginning to their lifelong friendship, although who's to say how long life really is.
