This is a Dust Wraith. Hope the last two chapters cleared some things up for you!
"But wait!" Iro exclaimed, interrupting Fa-Lin's account of events. "I found the scale!"
He showed his arm where the scale still rested embedded in his flesh. Then he realised what happened when he saw Fa-Lin's expression. "Oh...Fal...I'm so sorry."
"She was fighting when the Wraiths caught up to the group," Fa-Lin sobbed. Iro cradled him in his arms and stroked his hair. He looked up at the sad expressions of everyone around him.
"And where did you come into this?" Iro asked Murtagh, who he was introduced to before.
"We stumbled into him and his dragon during a blizzard," Aegis explained. "I had seen that our position was a lost cause in the city and retreated to go find you and Fa-Lin. I made it just in time to see you knocked over the head by a Forest Wraith. Beo was there in a minute, burning and tearing the Wraiths apart."
Iro could feel Beo's savage pleasure at the memory. Aegis continued, "Then he went over to you and curled around you. He must have done some kind of magic because the Wraiths were thrown back, allowing us to escape. But we couldn't see to wake Beo. And we couldn't get to you because Beo's body was in the way. Not even magic could move him."
It must have been one of those involuntary bursts of magic that dragons experience, Beo supplied. But it must have been stronger than anyone could have possibly expected. How long has it been since?
Iro noticed everyone's hesitant reactions. It was Fa-Lin who answered, "Almost a thousand years"
Iro slumped back. A thousand years!
The magic must've stopped time for us, Beo commented. Otherwise, I would be much larger than I am. I was not aware I was capable of such a feat of magic. I am sorry.
"It's not your fault," Iro said. "But don't worry. We'll end those who are responsible."
"But how are we meant to battle the Wraiths again?" Alanis asked. "So many died last time and I would not have our race annihilated."
"That's because we fought alone last time," Iro pointed out. "This time, we'll have allies. The elves of Ellesméra as well as the humans and dwarves further south. I have travelled to their capital city and met with their Queen. Together, we can and we will wipe the Wraiths from the face of the earth!"
