Professor Elvin Gadd is a paranormal investigator who is, like, the most amazing person in the world and cares about Luigi about 35% of the time that he sends him off on deadly missions. He went around the world finding ghosts and trapping them in paintings using his machine, the Ghost Portrificationizer.

He managed to capture a bunch and they'll become important soon. Eventually, he captures and portrificaizes one of King Boo's most loyal - uh - boo,Boolossus, a combination between a bunch of boos making up a colossal boo, basically.

King Boo gets angry, builds a mansion using his magic and frees all of E. Gadd's paintings in revenge, putting them in the mansion.

Long story short, Luigi and Mario get scammed by winning a mansion in a contest that they didn't apply for. Mario goes first and gets portraificaized by King Boo. Luigi comes by and meets E. Gadd who's like, "I'm old so you do my job now."
