Shiro was a famous pilot even before and they all have been chosen by the lion ships to be their pilot.
Also shiro and keith had a brotherly relationship since keith is an orphanage and only looked up to shiro as a big brother.
Shiro told keith if anything happened to him keith should be the leader and the black lion originally shiros, chose keith to be his new pilot.
Lance always wanted to be the leader and best so hes obviously very jealous even tho keith didnt want to be the leader cause all he cares about is shiro.
