Episode Twenty-Two

I entered the house a few minutes later. I could hear laughter, and it made me stop just inside the door. I felt like I was an intruder, and I started to open the door to leave when I heard Jameson speak.

"Nicky, can you get another plate?" I heard someone make a comment about a girlfriend, and Jameson didn't answer. His face appeared in front of me, and my heart started beating faster. He walked towards me, looking small in my jacket just as before. He reached his hand out to me, and my grip on the doorknob tightened before I released it. Reaching for his hand and grabbing it with both of mine. He pulled me forward, and I let him for a few feet before stopping him.

"I'm nervous." I whispered, and he nodded. I thought for a second that he was going to tell me it was alright to go, but suddenly his lips met mine, and I was breathless for another reason. "Well." I muttered, as he pulled away. I let him pull me the rest of the way into the dining room, and as I looked at the faces of the Reagan family I took a deep breath. "Hullo." My voice came out braver than I was, and as the Reagan's slowly realized why I was here a few smiled.

"Jett." Henry stood up, walking over and reaching to hug me. I accepted the hug, "Don't be nervous." He just barely whispered in my ear, before stepping back and tapping the back of an empty chair. "You can sit next to Nicky."

I nodded, pulling the chair out for Jameson, before sitting down in between him and Nicky. It was quiet between all of us for a minute, before Frank spoke up. "Who wants to say grace?"

"Grace!" One of the little blonde boys, one of Danny's, said loudly and excitedly. The table laughed, and I smiled at his enthusiasm.

"Never gets old." Danny said proudly, before reaching around his wife to high-five his kid. The older one mimicked his brother, "Still not funny when you say it Jack."

"I thought it was." He frowned, looking at the table dejectedly before looking back up at his dad.

A few at the table laughed before Jameson spoke up, "I'd like to say grace?"

"No!" Danny shouted with a smile, "You always say grace!" Erin tried to get a word in, but it just started an argument, I laughed along. Watching as it almost escalated to a playful fight, neither of Danny's kids helping. Both just shouting along randomly.

"Alright, alright!" Frank shouts over everyone, "Let's keep it civil."

Jameson's hand touched mine under the table, and I smiled down at it, before speaking up. "Can I say it sir?"

I saw Henry smile out of the corner of my eye, before nodding in time with Frank. "Only if you call me Frank." I nodded. I watched as everyone reached to hold hands, Jameson let go of mine briefly, to take it on top of the table. A hand touched my right elbow, and I turned to see Nicky holding her hand out to me. I took it, setting my hand on the table before bowing my head.

"Bless us O' Lord, for these thy gifts which we are about to receive, from thy bountiful hands, through Christ our Lord, amen." Everyone repeated 'amen', released hands, and then the food started to passed around. I scooped a little bit of everything on my plate, eating bites of it as I went.

"Your hands stop shaking yet kid?" I looked up a bit confused, holding Jameson's hand a little tighter on my lap. He laughed, shaking his head and leaning back as an answer to Danny's question. "My kid brother finally popped his cherry!" Danny shouted excitedly and I snorted, shaking my head as I looked over at Jameson. He had a smile on his face, but it didn't exactly reach his eyes, as the conversation moved on I leaned towards Jameson.

"Are you alright?" I whispered a few inches away from his ear, and he nodded. I squeezed his hand as I leaned away, taking another bite of my food.

"So Jett," I looked up, looking at Linda as she spoke. "What do you think of New York?" I smile, swallowing whatever food that was in my mouth before answering.

"It's changed a lot, since I was last here, but," I looked over at Jameson, "it has it's perks." When I looked back at Linda she was smiling, and I watched as the conversation switched topics again.

It was different than what I had expected, the family wasn't as surprised as I thought they would have been, but maybe it's because they all sort of new. Danny did at least, and I'm fairly certain both Erin and Frank had figured it out. Linda probably new because of Danny, so it was really only Henry and the kids who didn't know. Not that I minded, Henry had already taken a shining to me, and the boys were just a bit to young to really understand.

"'Down these mean streets, a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished or afraid.'" Frank spoke suddenly, and the table quieted. He looked up at everyone expectantly, and I replied.

"Raymond Chandler." I muttered, and Frank nodded.

"His definition of a hero," Frank sighed as he leaned back, glass in hand. "Could have been talking about Joe." The mood of the table turned somber.

"I'd like to think he was there with us last night," I looked away, feeling hot from tears but not letting them fall. "That he is with all of us, no matter what." Everyone at the table nodded, and I smiled sadly.

"I think he's at peace now," Henry spoke up, and I turned to him nodding.

Jameson leaned towards me, his forehead pressing into my shoulder. It took everyone at the table a minute to smile, but we all silently agreed that Joe was happy for everything that had happened. I was happy as well, sitting at the table with my boyfriend. His hand in mine, and a step towards a family that won't disappoint. I smiled, lifting my glass.

"To Joe." The table copied my movements.

"To Joe."
