The first thing she saw upon waking up was a short woman. She was Jay's copyright or Jay was hers. Her eyes were puffy from all the crying she'd done. She seemed lost in thought and Wendy wasn't sure if she should disturb her. The woman turned towards her and it took a while before she noticed Wendy was awake.
"Hello young lady," came a brittle voice. "You gave us quite a scare."
"Where I'm I? Oh my God! Jay! Where's he?" Came a voice that she could barely recognize as her own.
"You're in the hospital, MP Shah to be precise. He's in the room next to yours. And he's in pretty bad shape. The doctors said he will make it though," she said, breaking down into a sob. "Forgive my manners, I'm Mrs. Kanyi,Jay's mum."
"I can tell. You look alike," came Wendy's response. "What happened?"
"You were shot at before the car crash." Wendy was taken aback by that piece of information. She remembered seeing Jay gasp at the red spot on his chest before they crashed. "Do you have anyone we can call?" Jay's mum asked bringing her back from her trip down memory lane.
"My parents, but they are abroad." Jay's mum looked at her with sad eyes. "There's my best friend, Rehema who is also my roommate. I should let her know," she said after a while.
"I'll make arrangements," Jay's mum said as she got up.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" She asked. "You don't even know me."
"You're in love with my son. I can see it in your eyes, hear it in your voice." She looked dazzled by the statement. "You thought I couldn't tell!" Came a chuckle from Jay's mum. "A mother always knows, and you can take that to the bank."
"Thank you Mrs Kanyi."
"Call me Liz. I have a feeling we're going to be great friends Wendy." And with that, she left closing the door behind her, leaving Wendy alone to her raging thoughts. She noticed that there was a vase of flowers with a get well soon card from the Kanyi's. She couldn't help but think that it was all Jay's mum's idea. No,it was Liz's idea. It wasn't long before she drifted back to sleep. At one point in time, she thought she heard Mark's voice in her room.

She was woken up by a commotion coming right outside her door. She heard some shouting. "I must see her. You have no right to keep me from seeing her." Someone said angrily. She recognized that voice but she couldn't quite place it.
"Sir, you can't go in there. You're not listed as her next of kin, or her acquaintance for that matter," said a female voice that she didn't recognize.
"She's my wife you idiot. And I'm going in whether you like it or not." And then it hit her, it was Calvin. She felt herself begin to panic. This couldn't be happening to her.
"Sir,I'm going to have to call security!"
"Do as you please. But I'll rain hellfire on you and this hospital for that. I'll come at you with everything I have. And trust me, you won't like it, not one bit." And then the door opened. He walked in, a menacing look on his face that she curled into a fetal position. He saw this and a malicious cackle escaped his lips. "Hello wife. Did you think I wouldn't find out about this. That you've been whoring around!" His voice thundered across the room. "He got what he deserved. Frankly, I wish he were dead, but then again, who knows, he might not actually make it."
"Get out Calvin. I'm no longer your wife," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "You can't hurt me anymore. And what have you done? Did you have anything to do with Jay's shooting?"
"What exactly did you mean young man?" She heard a deep orotund voice. Behind Calvin stood Jay's mum and a tall heavily built man who she could only guess was Jay's father, Mr Kanyi. He exuded raw power and commanded respect from everyone around him. "I'm not going to repeat the question."
"And who the hell do you think you are to come budging in like this? This is a private matter between my wife and I," he said, trying to look all macho but one could hear his voice falter. By then, the hospital security had arrived. He had no other option but to leave. He took another look at the man who had just walked in. He looked familiar but he couldn't quite place where he had seen him. He made a mental note to find out everything he could about Wendy's fling. "You're all going to regret this!" He said and left.
Wendy broke down in tears and she felt someone hug her tightly. "Hush now child. It's going to be okay. He won't hurt you."
