Gordie POV

We had walked for an eternity and we came up upon the high bridge across the river. In the silence, Adelaide asked,

"Any of you guys know when the next train is due? "

We all shook our head "no", so Chris suggested,

"We could go down to the route-136-bridge."

Teddy looked at him funky and replied,

"What, are you crazy? That's five miles down the river. You walk five miles down the river you gotta walk five miles back. That could take till dark. If we'll go across here we'll get to the same place in ten minutes."

Vern looked over at him and challenged his reply with,

"Yeah. But if a train comes there's nowhere to go."

Teddy scoffed at what Vern said and shot him down saying,

" Well, there isn't? You just jump."

Concerned with Teddy's answer, Adelaide said,

"Teddy,"

She paused, trying to figure out a non-crass way of saying it,

"That's a hundred feet."

Chris, disregarding Adelaide attempt at being nice said,

"Dolly's right,"

Under her breath, Adelaide muttered,

"Not that damned nickname,"

As Chris didn't hear her and continued on,

"That's a suicide jump, Teddy."

Me and Vern both nodded in agreement as Adelaide, flustered from the statement, began rambling,

"I-I-I mean, ye-yeah I w-was trying n-not to s-say it like th-that b-but yeah."

Chris smirked at the flustered doll as Teddy declared to us,

"Okay. You guys can go round if you want. I'm crossing here. And while you guys are dragging your candy-a**es halfway across the state and back I'll be waiting for you on the other side, relaxing with my thoughts."

Adelaide, trying to recover from her flustered state quipped,

"You use your left hand or your right hand for that?"

We all snickered at her comment until Teddy's reply,

"You wish,"

He said it with a wink and started down the bridge, and Chris tightened his hold around Adelaide's waist, and I shot him a smug looked which to put it simply, ignored. Adelaide and he started down the tracks, and me and Vern looked at each other and followed them. We had been walking along the bridge for a bit, Teddy in the front, with Adelaide and Chris, not too far behind. I was behind Vern, who was crawling on all fours. Suddenly, he stopped, turned back and with sad, puppy-dog eyes said,

"I lost the comb."

"Forget it, Vern,"

I replied, not really caring. We continued along then suddenly, something felt off. I reached down and to my horror, they were shaking, and I knew what that meant,

"TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!"

Vern, at my statement, yelled in horror,

"Oh shit."

The rest of the gan got off the tracks as soon as possible, with Teddy booking it, and Chris doing the same, only carrying Adelaide. I ran to Vern, trying to get him up, yelling,
