Anna looked up at the old house. Taking in the peeling paint, the shudders falling off, the siding that so badly needed help. She turned towards the deck, looking up towards the door. Two solid doors stared at her. Almost as if they were daring her to leave the house alone. To let it continue rotting alone on the cliff.
Anna quickly turned to see some kids calling out to her. Yelling out the words hey lady, over and over again, as they raced on their bikes up the driveway. She stood waiting for them to meet her at the end. Finally the four children stood before her waiting for something as they sat on their bikes. Covered with dirt smudges, huffing from their ride up the hill.
"Hey lady!" One of the boys almost yelled at her. "What'd ya think your doin?" The taller girl smacked him over the head. "Timmy! Don't yell at the newcomer like that, or else I'm gonna tell Mama you're being rude." The boy called Timmy mumbled out a sorry to Anna. "I didn't mean anything, I just got excited is all." Anna nodded at the kids.
"Well what are your names'?" She asked, sitting down on her luggage. The tall girl gave her a big smile. "Well the girl over there is Sam, then the brown haired boy one is Billy. This idiot is Timmy, and I'm Lorra." Anna returned the children's waves along with a smile. Billy looked up at the house. He moved in front of Sam. Looking back at Anna he told her she shouldn't stay here. Taken aback by his statement she watched the child, asking why before Lorra could say anything.
"He doesn't want you here." He pointed up to the window in the corner. "Said you're gonna get hurt and make him sad." Billy turned Sam around, telling her to go home with him. Anna turned towards the window. Not seeing anything, she turned back to the remaining children. Trying to ignore the feeling of being watched. "What was that about?"
Timmy shook his head. "Oh it's just the old man." He smiled and waved to the window. "He likes to watch us play outside. He said we keep the house young." Lorra gave him a sharp poke. "Come on Timmy, Mama's gonna be angry if we're late for lunch again" She turned her bike around. "Nice meeting you Anna! We'll see ya soon." Anna waved goodbye to the children.
Turning back to the house, she made her way up the deck. Trying not to cast a look upstairs as she walked. She came to the two doors. With a deep breath she pushed on both of them. There came a long, low creek as she pushed them back. Stepping back she grabbed her bags, then turned around. Taking her first look at the inside of the house. Taking a deep breath, she stepped over the threshold. Unknowingly starting something that she wouldn't be able to stop.
