Rewritten - an alternate ending

Part 7 - What did I do?

Lucas and Max began to throw anything and everything at the mind flayer. They broke into stores to find anythig they could throw. The mind flayer crashed through pillars and walls, attempting to dodge the flying objects. As it turned away, Will, Steve, Robin and Mike (who was carrying El in his arms) ran to Scoops Ahoy and hid in the break room. 'What do we do now?' Robin asked "Well.. I guess we just wait for Nancy and Jonathan to find us a way out and then we get to finally leave this place" Steve answered, pulling a chair out and offering it to Mike "Is she still out?" Mike weakly nodded, sitting down on the chair. 'It never takes this long... usually she's down for a few minutes and then she's ok. Lifting someone high up into the air like that is something I never thought she could be capable of. What if... she used every last bit of energy she had in her and.. now she has nothing. No energy, no strength. I know that probably doesn't even make sense but.. what part of any of this makes sense?' He looked around the room at his friends. There was a long silence that was only broken by the occasional cries of the monster "So no one ever actually explained to me what the hell is going on. What is that thing? Who is the mind flayer? Where is it from? Why does it exist? How does she have powers? How did this all start?" Robin asked. "Well it all started whe-" 'We found an exit!' Nancy interrupted, running into the room. "Oh, great! Where?" Steve left the wall he was leaning on. 'Not far. A store across from here has a door that leads out to the back of the mall. It's out of Billy's view so he shouldn't see us'

"Lucas do you copy?" Will picked up the walkie, looking through the window for Max and Lucas 'Yeah I copy. Did they find a way out?' "Yeah, come to Scoops Ahoy. We'll all go together." 'Got it. We need silence if we've gotta get past that thing so I'm gonna turn this off' Lucas turned his walkie off. He nodded at Max and they snuck around the mind flayer. "Shouldn't he be chasing us right now?" Max asked 'It's only interested in finding El I guess. But we should still be careful' They got to Scoops Ahoy and the others told them where the exit is. "Let's go. It's gonna find us if we stay here much longer" the group nodded and got ready to run. Mike had been quiet the whole time, occasionally nodding in agreement to plans. He got up from his seat when he heard a frail voice. "M-Mike?" 'El!' She hadn't even fully opened her eyes before she was met with a long kiss. Mike had tears running down his cheeks as he held El tight. The kiss lasted a long time, but for Mike it could never be long enough. The kiss ended and Mike was frozen, staring into El's bright eyes. She was back. He could feel it. The warmth of her body, her almost golden eyes, the way she looked at him. Mike new his El was back, the mind flayer was strong, but El was stronger. She was a fighter. 'El I.. I thought I lost you. For real this time... are you ok?' "What.. happened?" 'Y-you don't remember?' Mike glanced around the room, as the others exchanged concerned looks. "No... I just remember... Billy.. I was talking to him. There were fireworks... and then it all went black" El felt the cuts on her face and looked at the blood on her hand, confused. She saw the cuts all over Mike and Max limping. "Mike" She looked him in the eye "What did I do?"
