Cairo

I wonder how Skylar is doing. Is she angry? Sad? Is she with her Mom? All these thoughts race through my mind as I watch the slowly dying fire.

“Cairo!” A frantic voice yells through the comforting silence.

“Yeah, Mom,” I question, standing up.

“Oh, there you are,” she says in relief, throwing her arms around me.

“What are you doing here,” she asks, a frown on her lips.

“I came here to sleep,” I answer honestly, though I didn't do much sleeping. Most of it was crying over my pathetic life and staring at the blazing fire.

"Oh," she says. Then, realization crosses her tired face. "Oh!"

She throws her arms around me, holding me tight. I can hear her crying, so I allow myself to cry too.

"I'm so sorry. I've been so selfish, arguing with your Dad around the clock."

"What...what are you gonna do," I ask timidly. I didn't want her to burst into tears.

"I...I can't be with him anymore, Cairo. The other night, he said that he didn't care if it was his own daughter," she shakes her head sadly,"I won't be having any of that. So if he has to leave... he's going to leave."

I've never seen my Mom look so worn, tired, and just...sad.

"I'm sorry, Mom," I say truthfully. All anger towards her just vanished and I'm happy for that.

"No, it's not your fault. Okay? Now, don't you ever leave without my permission, alright? We were worried sick when we woke up and you weren't there."

I chuckle quietly. "Okay, Mom."

"I'm not kidding."

Skylar

“Thanks so much,” I tell Ethan when we finally get back inside the house. I'd taken a spin around the circular driveway, but did nothing more. We mostly went over controls and what they did. He told me that every car runs differently, some smoother than others. I didn't really get that, but he said once I drive two different cars, I would.

“You do know that its eleven at night,” Alec snaps once we make it to the living room.

I bite the inside of my cheek to keep from saying something rude.

“Yeah, so,” Ethan asks, seemingly oblivious to Alec's rude tone. I can't picture them being friends for some reason. Alec seems so tense, and he's so rude, but Ethan is so...laid back and fun.

‘‘Ryder had to go to another meeting, but he looked for you,’’ Alec says, pointing to me.

“Oh, well I was busy,” I snap, hanging Ethan's coat on the rack.

“To busy for your mate?” he asks. At my surprised expression, he adds, “he told me.”

“Well, I don't want him as a mate. If I could reject him I would, ” I admit. But I'd never heard of a mate rejecting the other, so it’s an impossible mission.

“This is why I can't stand humans!” Alec yells, slamming his fist down on the glass counter. It shatters, the glass landing on the floor noisily.

Ethan glances at me to make sure I'm okay, and thankfully, I'm unharmed.

“I think you should go calm down,” Ethan suggests, pointing to the door that leads to the backyard.

“No, I'm not going anywhere, get that filthy human out of my face,” he growls, his eyes shifting black.
