chapter two;
first day of school

"LUCY, GET DOWN HERE BEFORE YOU MISS BREAKFAST" Pepper yelled. Lucy took one last look at the mirror before grabbing her backpack and ran downstairs before Pepper yelled at her, again. She is truly impressed at how Pepper manage to be heard from the kitchen up to her bedroom with the huge space that the Avengers facility is.

"Morning" Lucy greeted as she got into the kitchen. She could smell the toasted bacon and scrambled eggs. "Looking good, uncle Rhodey" she commented on Rhodey's cooking before placing her backpack down. Rhodey smiled smugly as he put the breakfast on Lucy's plate. "Morning, Dad" she said, kissing him on the cheek and swiftly taking the vacant seat next to Pepper.

"Morning, sweetie" he replied. "So, first day of sophomore year! How are we feeling?" he yelled, as Pepper and Rhodey followed with a cheer. Lucy rolled her eyes and ate her breakfast.

"I honestly can't feel any different from last year" Lucy replied. Tony scoffed and put down his coffee.

"Of course there's a difference! Everything is different now" he said. He's right. Everything is different now. It has been months yet Lucy couldn't help but feel how great it must be to have Natasha or Steve in the kitchen with them.

Lucy nodded silently, looking down at her breakfast, stirring her cup of coffee. "Yeah, everything's different" she mumbled. She could feel the tension building in the room, and she knew the rest of them felt the same. The doorbell rang and she instantly knew it was Happy. "That must be Happy" she said, standing up.

"Let me walk you out" Tony said, following her out of the kitchen, into the elevator. He pressed the button that leads to the first floor, and stood next to Lucy. "Is everything fine, Luce?" he asked.

Not really.

No.

I'm a mess, actually.

Lucy shook her head and chuckled, turning to Tony. "Yeah, everything's great" she said. "Why would you even asked?" she asked. Tony shrugged.

"Well, you've been acting all weird since your birthday, so I thought I would check on you" he said. The elevator door opened as they reached the first floor. "That's what we do, right? We check on each other?" he asked. Lucy nodded as they reached the front door.

"Of course" she replied. Tony nodded and embraced her into a hug.

"Hey. We keep no secrets, alright?" he asked. Lucy nodded. She knew that he has a suspicion that something was up.

"No secrets" she smiled, pulling away from the hug. Tony smiled and nodded.

"Have fun, kiddo. Be safe" he said. "I love you the most" he said, as she got into the car.

"I love you, too" she said, rolling down the window. She threw him a wave as Happy drove the car away from Tony. The facility gate closes and she sunk into her seat, sighing. Happy's phone notification broke her out of her thoughts and she couldn't help but gain curiosity as to who was contacting him. Happy took out his phone and sighed. "You got a girlfriend, there?" she smirked. Happy scoffed and put the phone down. "Ooh! A boyfriend?" she asked.

Happy sighed. "No. That was Peter Parker" he said. Lucy furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "Look, can you do me a favor?" he asked. Lucy raised her eyebrows. "Please tell that kid to stop texting me or I might get a heart attack"

First days of school are always the most boring ones. Most teacher really just give out syllabus for students to read. When lunch came around, Lucy walked out of her Chemistry class and headed straight to the cafeteria. Her eyes scanned the cafeteria in the search of a certain red head. "Hey, Lucy" a voice said as she felt a tap on her shoulder.

She turned around to see Liz Allan, along with Betty Brant. She had never really talked to them, but she does see them around the campus. "Hey, guys" Lucy smiled.

"So, you know that we have the Academic Decathlon coming up in Washington in a couple of weeks. We were just wondering if you would like to join our team?" Liz asked, handing her the brochure of the Academic Decathlon.

Lucy nodded, scanning through the brochure. She opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Kennedy who appeared behind her. "Of course she'll join!" Kennedy said. Lucy turned to her, raising her eyebrows. "Right, Luce?" she asked. Lucy sighed and turned to Liz with a smile.

"Sure" she said. Liz and Betty smiled at her.

"Awesome! Oh, Kennedy you can join too, if you'd like" Betty added. Kennedy nodded.

"Great! When will our practice be?" Kennedy asked.

"After school today. You can come and watch us just to see the gist of what's happening" Liz said. Kennedy nodded as Liz and Betty left. Lucy turned to Kennedy, raising her eyebrows.

"You said you wanted to join more school activities!" Kennedy exclaimed. "Besides, this way you can be closer with Peter" she said, wiggling her eyebrows. Lucy furrowed her eyebrows as she took a seat in one of the cafeteria benches.

"Why would I wanna be closer to Peter?" Lucy scoffed. Kennedy smiled and shook her head.

"Nothing, nothing" she said. "You'll thank me later for this, Luce, I promise"
