Getting Back Together

Betty was sick and tired of this breakup. She still loved Jughead and she hoped he still loved her too. She put on some leggings, a leather jacket, a hood, and headed down to the Whyte Wyrm, certain that would be where she would find her beloved. They had been broken up for about two weeks, she had given him space, but space was ridiculous, she knew that now. She missed him and she was going to let her feelings be heard.

She walked through the doors, acting as she belonged there, and nobody seemed to notice her. Across the bar, in front of the stage, she saw him. She debated what she should say to him. Should she just stroll up casually and say hi? Should she launch herself into his arms as she saw in movies? Should she order something from the bar and wait for him to notice her? Before she could do any of this, she noticed what was happening on the stage. Toni, the serpent who worked on the Southside paper with Jughead, the one she had been jealous of when she and Jughead were dating, was pole dancing for the crowd of mostly older serpents.

Worst of all, when she averted her attention back to Jughead, she saw his eyes transfixed on the she-serpent, watching her every move, and finally, she understood. The real reason he didn’t want to be with her anymore. She wouldn’t give him what he wanted. Her mother and everyone around her had always told her that all boys wanted was sex. She had thought Jughead was different, that he loved her because of her personality, because of all they had been through together, but no. What he really wanted was someone like Toni, who flaunted her body to anyone and everyone, not a sweet little virgin like her.

Betty was a rational thinker, she didn’t want to jump to conclusions. She didn’t want to be that girl who believed everything she saw immediately because that kind of thing led to many misunderstandings. She waited in a corner until after the “show” was over. Then, when she saw Toni back behind the bar, she walked up to her.

“Hey Blondie,” Toni started, not in an unfriendly tone, “What brings you around to our side of the tracks?”

“Hey Toni, I’m going to be blunt. Have you and Jug...” She took a deep breath, “done stuff?” Toni drew in a sharp breath.

“Wait. Are you two still together? Because I thought...” That gave Betty the answer she needed and dreaded.

“If it helps, it’s nothing serious, we’re just fooling around.”

“No! No, we’re not. Trust me, you can have him, I just, wanted to know.” The two girls stared at each other for a few awkward seconds.

“Well, I should probably go...”

Suddenly, the one person she did not want to see at the moment, showed up next to the two of them.

“Betty? What are you doing here?” Betty glanced at Toni.

“Nothing, I was just leaving,” She turned and was about to leave when Jughead grabbed her arm gently and turned her back around to face him.

“What, Jughead? I have to go.”

“Did you come here to see me? Do you need anything?”

“You know what? Maybe I did. But I certainly don’t want or need anything from you anymore, so just, leave me alone.”

“This isn’t fair, you show up here, with no warning, and it feels like you’re attacking me.”

“I was about to leave just a second ago, what was stopping me?”

“What do you want from me, what did I do wrong exactly?”

“You’re really asking me that right now?”

“Yes, I want to know and I think I deserve to know.”

“Fine, I’ll tell you. You tell me you love me and I told you that I loved you too, and the second I try to show my love for you by trying to be a part of your world, you shut me out.”

“But I-”

“No, be quiet, my turn to talk, don’t interrupt me. It is my decision whether or not I want to join the serpents, not your’s, not my mother’s, mine. I loved you Jughead, I still do, but you pushed me away and that hurt. I thought I would be fine just being friends but I can see now that I really can’t. I was only putting on this facade because I assumed we’d get back together. I thought we were just having a break. But, on top of everything else, I also realized another reason you don’t want to be with me anymore. I won’t have sex with you. Now that you’re part of the serpents, you clearly have your pick of beautiful women to do whatever you want with because you’re the great FP Jones’s son. Clearly, my love isn’t enough for you. I came over here today to try and reconcile with you, to tell you that I still love you, that I hope we can make this work. Basically, I came to grovel, and I see you, staring at her in admiration, pole dancing of all things, no offense Toni, even though when I did that, to try to be a part of your world, what did you do? You did the one thing that would hurt me more than any physical wound or mess with the serpents could, you broke up with me.” Tears were streaming down Betty’s face and quite the crowd had gathered around them but she didn’t care. It felt good to finally get all of this stuff off her chest. “On top of everything else, I learn that not even a week after our breakup, you sought comfort in ‘fooling around’ with someone else. Not even a week, Jughead. Do you know how that feels to hear? Am I not even worth a week of your life?” She sounded small and desperate now and she knew this was to no avail. “Whatever, I’m going to go. Sorry for embarrassing you in front of your friends.”

“Wait, don’t leave.”

“Why shouldn’t I?”

“Because you’re right. I’ve done so many wrong things since I’ve joined the serpents. I don’t regret it but I just didn’t want that life for you, but I understand that it’s your call. I didn’t want to seem too controlling, I just would never forgive myself if you ever got hurt because of me. You’re worth so much more to me than you’ll ever know. There’s no excuse for what I did with Toni. I know that. After we broke up I was just so depressed, but all I really wanted was to be with you. So much so that I don’t mind admitting to everyone here that I’m still a virgin. I never went all the way with her. The only person I’ve ever loved enough to even consider doing that with is you, and I would never rush you if you’re not ready. Of course, I still love you. How could I not? You’re absolutely perfect in every way. I didn’t want to drag you down with me, but I see now that that is not my business, you’re your own person and I never want you to stop being who you are. I should have known that you could handle it. No amount of words could possibly explain how much you mean to me.”

And with that, he grabbed her face and kissed her. Her first thought was that she should pull away, but all of their happy memories came rushing back to her and she melted into the kiss. Everyone around them started to clap, even Toni, which she found odd. After they finally pulled away from each other, Tall Boy handed Jughead a serpent jacket which he helped her put on and everyone cheered as they kissed again.
