A/N: Yet another way the horrible Bughead breakup could have ended.

Betty had noticed Jughead wasn’t at the party, and she had found it weird for him to miss out on free food. She had gone looking for him, only to find him, upset and alone, at the top of the stairs. They might not be together anymore, but Betty still cared about him, of course.

She asked him what was wrong, and she stood there and listened as he told her about his various woes. She had missed hearing him talk, especially to her, about serious things. It had been so long since they had said more than five words to one another, because of how quickly it would become awkward.

Now, he was speaking to her and it felt familiar, it felt right. It made perfect sense to her that he should come to her with his problems so that she could help him, just like he would help her in the past. She had missed him so much, their late-night conversations, their investigation sessions, their many burgers at Pop’s.

She had ruined it.

“The worst part is, none of it even matters. ‘Cause she’s back.” She nodded sympathetically as he continued,  “It’s like every decision I’ve made since we broke up, including our break up, just makes things worse and worse.”

Hold on. Had he just said what she thought he did? Had admitted their breakup was a mistake? Did he regret it? Did he miss her too? Betty’s heart swelled and her brain spiraled. She didn’t want to mention it since maybe he had just said it, so he could blame his problems on her, or maybe it had just slipped out, and he didn’t mean it? Maybe he did think it was a mistake, but still didn’t want to get back together with her?

Or maybe, a voice in the back of her mind said, maybe he’s waiting for you to accept him and make the first move.

Then her thoughts spiraled again, maybe he just said it so that she could apologize and then that would be that, and nothing more.

She realized he was watching her expectantly. She also realized that during his rant, she had put her hand on his arm. She quickly pulled it away. Crap. She was just standing there, with a dumb expression on her face. Had he said something she was supposed to respond to?

She opened her mouth to say something, unsure of what it would be when she figured out that the reason he was looking at her oddly was because her phone had started to ring.

She looked at the caller ID, unknown number, she pressed decline and turned back to look at his face.

All she wanted to do right now was kiss him, but she knew she couldn’t do that. What if he pushed her away, yelled at her, and left? What if he pushed her off, left, and then never spoke to her again?

What if he just stood there, without saying anything, and things got even more awkward then when they first broke up? They had made a little bit of progress in becoming friends again, and she didn’t want to ruin it. Then again, she didn’t really want to just be friends with him.

And then, the worst scenario of all. What if he kissed her back and then pulled away and said that it was a mistake? She couldn’t risk it, could she? There were, after all, so many ways this could go wrong, and only one way it could go right.

While she was in her own little world, making up scenarios in her head, she realized with a shock, that she was still staring into his icy blue eyes. Shit shit shit. Why couldn’t she not zone out for like five minutes?

He was staring right back at her, unblinking, not saying anything. At that moment, she would have given anything in the world to hear what he was thinking.

She had to get out of there. The urge to kiss him was too strong. She would do it and she would lose him forever so she had to find an excuse to leave right the hell now. She averted her eyes and looked down at her shoes, after what seemed like an hour of gazing into his eyes. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, very embarrassed.

“Um, I should get back to the party, Veronica’s probably looking for me,” she squeaked awkwardly. She turned to go, furious at herself for not being more daring. Veronica or Cheryl would have done it in a heartbeat, no matter the consequences. At least she would know. She hesitated, her hand on the banister.

“Or you could stay,” she heard whispered from behind her. She whirled around and looked into his eyes, wondering if, hoping that there was a deeper meaning to his words, other than him not wanting to be alone right now.

“Stay,” he whispered again, arms slightly outstretched in her direction. The way he was looking at her, she had to do it, had to try.

Before she could talk herself out of it, she launched herself into his arms and kissed him, hard. And he kissed her back.

He could still pull back and say it was a mistake, but right now, all Betty cared about was his mouth on hers, nothing else mattered. When she felt his tongue in her mouth, she knew she had made the right call. Her lungs were on fire, she couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t believe this was happening. But it was. This was no dream. This was real. He was real. They were real.

Veronica looked around the room. She had just finished introducing Archie to her Abuelita. Right now, however, she had seen him go somewhere with her father, and she needed her bestie. She scanned the room once more, but couldn’t find the pale pink dress she was looking for.

Then she had an idea, she couldn’t see her interesting-hat-choice-friend either. Could it be that they were together? She climbed the stairs, wondering if they had gone up together for some privacy.

When she was halfway up, she clapped her hand over her mouth to quiet her gasp. There Betty was, basically eating Jughead’s face, as he supported her with his arms. Veronica quickly backed away and ran quietly down the stairs.

She was so happy for her best friend. She had hated seeing Betty so upset, crying over how Jughead had dumped her right after FP’s retirement party, the same night that Veronica was crying over Archie. She was glad he had finally gotten over their stupid argument and realized that he and Betty were perfect for each, endgame even.

“Kevin!” she cried when she finally found him.

“Hmm?” He asked, his mouth full of food.

“Bughead’s back together!” she shouted excitedly.

“Yessssss hashtag Bughead forever!” He fangirled when he was done eating.

Finally, they both pulled away, due to lack of air. She just stood there, smiling like an idiot. He regretted their breakup every hour of every day since they broke up. He had limited their contact as much as possible because he knew he couldn’t resist her. He convinced himself that it was to keep her safe. But he knew now, that she would be safest with him, so he could protect her from anyone and everything. He didn’t want her to feel alone anymore.

“God, I’ve missed you,” he said, hugging her tighter against his chest.

She pulled away from him, hands on her hips,

“Don’t you dare leave me again, Jughead Jones.”

“Never,” he answered, before pulling her in for another kiss.
