I woke up in a sweat. Another nightmare. I shook my head and got up. The floor was cold.
I went take a shower. I changed into high waisted shorts and a simple shirt. I went on my phone until I heard my door open.
" Aunt Susan." I said as I hugged her.
" Hey, sweetie. Um, Hayes came over." She smiled. I got up and walked downstairs. I see Hayes in khakis and a flannel shirt. He looked up and smiled.
I'm mad at him but I can't help it. He makes me think differently. For once, I don't care about school, my grades, everything I earned. I can actually be a girl. Not the nerd that is always reading or studying.
" Hey." He said. We walked outside.
" Sorry about last night. " He said.
" Hayes, you don't have to apologize. " I said. He held my hand. I looked down. My hand fit perfectly in his. Stop thinking.
" I do. I should have said something." He said.
" It's okay." I smiled.
" On Monday, there is a football game at school. I wanna see you there. You can be my good luck charm." He smiled. I blushed. How can I be a good luck charm? The things he say is just... unexplainable and unexpected.
" Wait, Madison will be mad." I said. I don't want everyone to think that I'm stealing her man. It's bad already at school.
" She can't be mad. You are there to watch the game. It's not like I'll kiss you there." He laughed. I forced a laugh. Gosh.
" Yea." I said. We got silent.
" Wanna go somewhere?" He asked.
" Okay." I said.
" Trust me, you will have fun. Meet me later." He said as he began to walk away.
" Okay, bye." I said as I walked inside.
A part of me didn't trust him but a part of me wants to know what it is like to have fun.
" Meeting Hayes?" Aunt Susan said. I jumped.
" Aunt Susan, where you spying on us?" I asked.
" Of course, I promised to take care of you... know if something happens, call me." I nodded.
An hour later, we arrive at a gate that says "No Trespassing".
" Hayes." I held his hand, scared. I instantly let go.
" Don't be scared." He said. I nodded and gulped.
This is illegal. Something I can't do. This would destroy me and haunt me.
Okay, stop overreacting and just climb the fence.
We climbed over the fence and arrived at a forest. I know this isn't good. We walked around.
" So." Hayes said, breaking the silence.
" What happened during the party with you and...?" I trailed off.
" We got in an argument." He said.
" It's all my fault." I said, even more scared.
" Bethany-" Hayes was cut off.
" Hey! No trespassing!" We turn around and see a police officer. Yep, my reputation is gone.
" Run!" Hayes said. We ran through the forest. The man still running after us. I ignored the pain in my legs. I ignore the branches hitting my face. I fell on a tree branch and fell. I seriously need to work out.
" Bethany." Hayes ran by me.
" I think I twisted my ankle. Just go." I tried to push him, but he picked me up and ran. I got down and ran with him.
" Hayes, just go. I don't want you to be in trouble." I said, noticing that I was falling behind.
" I'm not leaving you. I know that man and he hates kids. He will hurt you. I'm not letting that happen." He said as he held my hand.
" He is a police officer!" I shouted, " I can reason with him."
Hayes ignored me and kept running. We faced a dead end. Hayes still held my hand. He stood in front of me.
" Keep your hands up!" The police shouted. We raised our hands up and the man came to us. He handcuffed our hands behind our backs.
" Come with me." He said. Hayes looks at me.
Later on, Hayes and I are out of breath. The man has his arm around my waist and I feel his hand going inside my shirt. I'm very uncomfortable.
" I'll tell you one more time, get away from her." Hayes growled.
" Listen, lover boy. I can do what I want." He said. I looked at Hayes. He mouthed the words, I'm sorry. I think he mouthed those words.
" Sir, you can't." I said.
" Excuse me, who here is breaking the law?" He asked.
" Sir, you are touching me in an inappropriate way. Not only you can go to lose your job but you can also go to jail." I said. He ignores me and his hand slips away from me. Hayes's face softens as the officer did that. We get in the car and he drives.
" I hate this feeling." I said.
" What?" Hayes asked.
" When you do something wrong and you know something bad will happen." I said.
" Don't worry." He said. I know Hayes is a bad boy but he wouldn't do anything this bad, right?
" One time, I stole gum at a store," Hayes laughed," I was like 5 years old." Well. I guess he started his bad ways at a young age.
" Really?" I asked.
" It was kind of stupid, but my mom won't let me. She found out and put it back." He said. We stopped talking. The man stops driving. We are at the police station. We get out and walk in.
" It's cold in here." I said out loud.
" Shut up." The man said. We continue to walk.
" Do you know anyone who can talk to us?" The police man said. Hayes looked down.
" My aunt Susan." I said.
" Alright." The man looked through files. I guess we are in his office. It's a small room. He begins to dial my aunt.
" Hello, I'm officer Darwin. I have two kids here waiting for you..." He continued to talk. Minutes later, he put the phone away. He sat down.
" Listen, I hate kids who breaks the rules. But you all look like it's you're first time," he looked at me," I let you two off the hook. But if I see you breaking another rule-"
" We get it." Hayes said.
" Excuse me."
" You don't have to say all that stupid stuff, it gets boring." Hayes whined.
" Boy, you need to learn some respect." He said.
" Sir, you-" Hayes got cut off.
" Let's get you to your cells." He said.
" What? I thought we were off the hook." I said.
" I thought so too but he got a smart mouth. It would only be until your aunt comes." He said. We got up and he brings us to our cell. Hayes and I are locked in. I sit on the old bed thing. I began to tap my foot.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
" Stop that." Hayes said, annoyed. I stopped. That did hurt my feelings a little. Why did that hurt my feelings? He just asked to stop.
" Sorry." I mumbled.
" This is your fault." He said.
" My fault? "
" If you didn't trip, we would have gotten away."
" I told you to leave me."
" I should have." He said. I don't understand him sometimes. He is like a bipolar mess.
" I guess you should have." I said.
" What are you trying to say?" He said.
" You should have never talked to me. If it stayed as I don't know you... then this won't even happen. "
" You're right. I shouldn't have made a move to try and know you. You just- something about you just... Whatever it is... it's messing me up." We stayed quiet for a couple of minutes.
" I don't get it." I said, finally.
" Get what?" He said, looking at me.
" You start to be nice to me then you hate me but now you care for me. I don't know what to expect for you and it worries me... a lot." I said. Hayes opened his mouth to say something but closed it. Is he thinking? His head looked at the cold floor.
" But you made my life interesting so far." I smiled. He looked at me and smiled. He got up and sat by me. Our arms touched. I felt sparks. Is he feeling it too? I really hope so.
I take a risk and lay my head on his shoulder. He puts his arm around my waist. I never felt this way towards anyone before.
Somehow, I always find a way to love him even more. Even when he hates me, I still love him. It's just him. A teen who gets in lots of trouble. The total opposite of me.
" Bethany." Hayes said.
" Yea?"
" Can I tell you something?" He asked.
" Sure." I said.
" Wait...Not yet. I can't tell you yet." He said. I nodded and closed my eyes.
He makes me so confused. It's a new thing I never experienced. I always get things but not Hayes.
I held his hand.
I don't know if I'll ever understand Hayes. Or if he will ever understand me. I don't know and I don't want to know. But I'll wait.
