how to be strong/he sees angels

there once was a little boy
with holes for eyes,
he had a rock for a heart,
and two weights for lungs
(he had a life full of pain,
but didn't complain).
he spent every day crying,
crying for his mother and father
(that brought him into a world
with nothing but pain)
and when they didn't answer
he'd write a little letter
of how to be strong,
how to live through pain everyday
and come out of it
maybe a bit brighter than before
(but, unfortunately, he never believed
a word he'd written after all).

there once was a little girl
who had wished everyday
for the night to come
that she wouldn't be here anymore
(life was too painful, to go it alone),
she had eyes as bright as the sun;
a heart of liquid gold;
and lungs that grew flowers
with every breath she exhaled.
she had begged every day,
for a reason to stay
(but she never cried,
she wouldn't want to water
the demons that grow inside)
so when she stumbled upon a letter,
filled with scribbles of love and hope
(a list of reasons to be strong:
yourself being number one)
she screamed to the sky
that she just wanted to fly,
she wanted to be free
(she just wanted to be strong).

that same little boy,
on the eve of his birthday
went to pray to his parents
(begging them to love him,
just begging them to care)
and finally he saw something
(the first he'd ever seen).
a little girl with flowers for wings
and a crown made of gold
- just flying through the sky -
and though he knew
she wasn't soaring through the sky
just for him,
he didn't really care
(because he was seeing an angel
and it felt so real,
he was seeing an angel
and it felt like she was right there).

the world cried that day,
because the boy with holes for eyes
could finally see
(the boy who prayed for his mom every night was given a second chance)
"he sees angels!" they'd sing
and that little girl
(the one who'd wished to be an angel,
wished to fly so high in the sky
that she couldn't spot a demon -
not even in her mind),
they'd sing for her too
(because she'd finally got her wish).
