submerged in water: teach me how to swim

it's a wonder
that the music carries all the way under
when you try to breathe
does it burn?

i live here
in the canals of a brain hemorrhage
when i breathe
it doesn't seem to work
———————————————————————
sometimes i'll try to hold you like one holds a phantom
brushing back blonde hair
i'm in love with the air that surrounds you
and the co2 you convert
(hope you don't mind that i traced the shape of your lips onto my nerves)
and when you vanish from my arms
into that place you always seem to go
i rage around town and kiss my own hands
i cry in the tub and listen to Florence
things take on a blurry sheen
mirrors begin to look like oceans
so i shatter them hoping something will spill out and fill up the house
anything
but there's simply glass on the floor and glass that i stomp on and a medical bill to pay
(you'd probably offer to cover it and make me soup in bed because that's just who you are)

i hope you think about me
as frequently as i think about you
other wise this would be embarrassing
