Stress Around My Neck

Don't laugh at me,

but stress feels like a child on my back--

they think I'm going to drop them,

so they hang on for dear life.

Little arms wrap around my neck,

slowly suffocating me innocently and instantly,

and the longer I stay upright,

the heavier the weight becomes.

When I'm finally losing my mind,

I try to drop the weight onto a waiting couch,

to cushion the fall and stifle the cries,

but it won't let go!!

I can't loosen those tiny arms around me,

at once so pure and so deadly.

The arms clench tighter and tighter,

and stress laughs at the pain it causes me,

perhaps intentionally mistaking my gasps for air as laughter.
